About the Department:

Enterprise Infrastructure Services (EIS) is responsible for the design, installation, operation, and maintenance of George Mason University’s network, compute, storage, and cloud infrastructure. This includes all inside and outside cable plant, hosting facilities, electronics, and services that support digital communication, data processing, and information storage for university enterprise, academic, and research applications.

About the Position:

The Cloud Center of Excellence (CCoE) is responsible for the design, deployment, and solution engineering for the university’s public cloud infrastructure. This position is a subject matter expert in cloud solutions, automation, and operations, specifically with Microsoft Azure. This position provides technical leadership, design, and engineering support for CCoE, EIS, ITS, and university cloud initiatives.

Responsibilities:

Designs, Deploys, and Supports cloud environments, systems, and services

  • Assists with planning and execution of cloud design and deployment projects;
  • Participates in projects, ensuring successful outcomes;
  • Works with ITS and external business units as needed to support deployed cloud infrastructure and systems;
  • Ensures cloud designs and configurations meet university business goals and are stable, secure, and high performing;
  • Recommends changes as necessary; and
  • Develops procedures and documentation to support operations.

Acts as a cloud technology specialist and Subject Matter Expert, staying abreast of current trends, platforms, and services

  • Meets with vendors at least once quarterly;
  • Interacts with peers from other universities at least twice annually;
  • Reads trade publications and performs online research; and
  • Meets regularly with CCoE teammates and other EIS teams.

Acts as a consultant to ITS and External Business Units

  • Engages with ITS teams and external business units to collaboratively develop cloud technology solutions to business problems.

Other duties as assigned 

  • Works outside of normal business hours as required for maintenance or deployment activities; 
  • Participates in special projects as assigned; and
  • Performs other duties as required. 

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent;
  • Experience providing customer technical support;
  • Some programming or scripting experience;
  • Demonstrated experience in a cloud or systems engineering role, supporting an organization’s tenant in a commercial cloud service;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of public cloud services and orchestration technologies;
  • Knowledge of cloud security principles and best practices;
  • Knowledge of networking technologies and concepts;
  • Knowledge of storage, backup and disaster recovery technologies;
  • Skilled at scripting or programming;
  • Ability to quickly understand new cloud services, applications and technologies, analyze their use case relative to university business need, and manage their adoption into the university's cloud estate;
  • Ability to operate a Windows or Linux server operating system;
  • Ability to work cooperatively and enthusiastically with a diverse team of people;
  • Demonstrated ability to diagnose and resolve system problems;
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple concurrent tasks;
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing to audiences of varying technical experience; and
  • Must be eligible to work in secure computing environments including International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in related field;
  • Microsoft System Administration Certifications;
  • Red Hat or other Linux System Administration Certifications; 
  • VMWare System Administration Certifications;
  • Other System/Network Administration or Design Certifications:
    • Experience leading an information technology implementation project;
    • Demonstrated experience in a cloud or systems engineering role, supporting an organization’s tenant in Microsoft Azure;
    • Typically, 3 or more years' experience in a cloud or systems engineering role, supporting an organization’s tenant in a commercial cloud service;
    • Typically, 3 or more years' experience in a cloud or systems engineering role, supporting an organization’s tenant in Microsoft Azure;
    • Extensive experience building scripts or programs to automate system/network maintenance and monitoring tasks;
    • Experience providing technical consulting services to internal or external customers;
    • Experience working in a higher education environment;
    • Expert knowledge of at least one public cloud platform and associated orchestration technologies;
    • Expert knowledge of cloud security principles and best practices;
    • Expert knowledge of storage, backup and disaster recovery technologies;
    • Knowledge of system performance testing methods and tools; and
    • Ability to administer a Windows or Linux server operating system.
