Job Description
Eastern Shore Community College is a member of the Virginia Community College System. The College serves the residents of Accomack County and Northampton County as a two-year institution of higher learning. Operating under policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Eastern Shore Community College Board, the college is financed primarily with state funds, supplemented by contributions from the two counties and the Eastern Shore Community College Foundation.
The VCCS Chancellor’s College Success Coach initiative supports the Commonwealth’s and VCCS’s commitment to improve student persistence, retention, and completion outcomes through the use of college success coaches. This initiative leverages the unique strengths and proven success strategies of Eastern Shore Community College (ESCC) while promoting collaboration and the sharing of best practices across the VCCS system.
The College Success Coach is responsible for working with a target population of college students to provide direct support and enhance their success in college. Interventions are aimed at fostering persistence leading to success – intermediate success and ultimately, graduation, transfer, and/or an industry credential. This position communicates with faculty and staff in multiple departments to ensure students have access to resources and support necessary for completion of their academic program. This position also works collaboratively to track and document student communications, interactions, and success strategies to support student success efforts.
Special Assignments | May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's/Required Qualifications | Ability to provide comprehensive academic advising, utilizing degree requirements and transfer pathways to co-create individualized, goal-oriented academic plans that align with student aspirations and labor market trends. Ability to identify and address the systemic barriers facing under-resourced and historically marginalized populations Ability to implement proactive trauma-informed support strategies for high-priority student groups Ability to maintain exceptional interpersonal and communication skills to cultivate trust-based relationships with a diverse student body Ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, and college partners to create a seamless network of support Ability to maintain high administrative proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and student information systems to ensure accurate data tracking and caseload management Ability to provide essential guidance on financial literacy, financial aid processes, and scholarship opportunities to mitigate economic obstacles to degree completion Ability to employ advanced problem-solving capabilities to navigate complex institutional policies and student crises Ability to design and facilitate high-impact group workshops and campus events centered on career readiness and academic persistence.
Additional Considerations | Work experience in academic counseling or academic coaching is preferred. Must possess a current driver’s license and the ability to provide own transportation to cover assignments throughout the community college service region, as necessary to the job.
