Job Description Summary

Extended Studies (EXST) is a self-support unit reporting to the Associate Provost for Academic Planning. EXST provides administrative services for a broad range of self-support initiatives that include program development and delivery, program management, student and program services, financial management, and marketing management. Programs include Summer Session, Winter Session, and Undergraduate Programs, and Professional and Continuing Education. Developed in partnership with University of Maryland units, these credit and non-credit initiatives target a diverse range of students at the pre-college, undergraduate, graduate, and professional level.

The Coordinator, Freshmen Programs is responsible for the operational and administrative management of the University's Freshmen Connection program, ensuring the effective delivery of services that support enrollment, registration, course scheduling, program operations, communications, events, and compliance with University policies and procedures. The position serves as the primary coordinator of the program's day-to-day administrative functions and collaborates extensively with campus partners to facilitate program implementation.

Academic advising is an important component of the position but is provided within the broader context of program administration and student services. The primary responsibility of this position is ensuring the effective administration and operation of the Freshmen Connection program.

This Coordinator may also assist with other Undergraduate Programs in Extended Studies.

Because Undergraduate Programs staff may work directly with minors, all selected candidates must successfully complete a criminal background check and Child Protective Services (CPS) screening prior to employment. Any required screening costs will be covered by Extended Studies.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Experience: One (1) year of experience in education or academic affairs. Other: Additional work experience as defined above may be substituted on a year for year basis for up to four (4) years of the required education. Knowledge of program management and assessment.Knowledge of and experience in developing and implementing instruction for higher education students.Skill in the use of Microsoft Office products. Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, regulations, and laws.Ability to multitask while demonstrating a commitment to customer service and sensitivity to a culturally and ethnically diverse community.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills: 
Education:
  • Bachelor's degree required. 
Experience:
  • Minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible professional experience in higher education administration, academic program administration, student services, enrollment management, or a closely related field.
  • Experience with University of Maryland academic and service units is highly desirable.
  • Understanding of UMD systems (SIS, TerpEngage, WebAdvise) is highly desirable.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
  • Sound decision-making, judgment, and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills with keen attention to detail and the ability to work in a fast-paced and highly collaborative environment.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and experience working with clients in an academic setting, including knowledge of FERPA and other applicable laws.
  • Proven ability to work independently, adapt to changing priorities, simultaneously manage multiple tasks, and a commitment to inclusion and working with diverse populations.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Drive, and Database Management competencies.
