Counselor Full Description

Unit Position Summary
MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine (MSUCOM) Wellness & Counseling Office is seeking a compassionate and skilled Counselor to provide direct mental health services and wellness programming to MSUCOM medical students. This part-time, on-call position is located at MSUCOM’s Detroit Medical Center campus and offers a flexible 20-hour work week, 1039 hours in any twelve (12) month period, providing in-person and telehealth counseling support to medical students. This position will be supporting medical students throughout their medical school education, across multiple campuses, and clinical rotation sites. This position plays a vital role in enhancing the emotional health and well-being of future DO, DO-PhD, and PA providers through brief and longer-term therapy, wellness initiatives and programming, care management, and referrals to appropriate supports and services.

This position will provide individual counseling services to students as they navigate the demands of medical school and clinical rotations through a wide range of personal, academic, and clinical challenges including stress, anxiety, relationship challenges, burnout, family concerns, trauma, grief, and loss. In providing comprehensive wellness supports to students, this position will be part of the Wellness & Counseling team in designing, coordinating, and implementing wellness activities and events, using content across all wellness dimensions, for orientations, academic courses, and special events. This position will work collaboratively with COM departments in engaging students, faculty, and staff in building a supportive and connected community across all three MSUCOM campuses.  

The position requires maintaining confidential documentation of student sessions and completing case notes in compliance with MSUCOM policies. The position will actively participate in weekly staff meetings, wellness programming and events, college-wide events including orientation programs, convocation [white coat ceremony], match day, and graduation. This position will engage in clinical supervision, professional development opportunities, and other duties as assigned in supporting MSUCOMs Wellness & Counseling Office goals, initiatives, and student support.

Pay: $40.00 per hour commensurate with experience 

Desired Qualifications
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing two years of graduate study beyond a Bachelor's degree such as a Masters in Social Work or Licensed Professional Counselor; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience counseling in a health/mental health environment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; State certification as a Social Worker, Professional Counselor, or Marriage and Family Therapist (LMSW, LPC, LMFT) required.

Work Hours: Minimum of 20 hours weekly; 8-5 with some early evening hours to accommodate students in their clerkship rotations.
 
Position Summary (Basic Job Function): This is a temporary or an on-call position. Provides professional support. Responsibilities may include general business, science, medical, agricultural or other professional support functions. Term: Temps can work two (2) nine (9) month terms with a week break in service in between and at the end of the second term terminate for three (3) months or switch to an on-call. On-Call allowed to work 1039 hours in any twelve (12) month period.
