Job Description:

This position supports University College, in partnership with Actionable Analytics, by transforming business needs into actionable data solutions—developing datasets, creating visualizations, and producing dashboards that enable data-informed decision-making. Using BI tools, the role delivers accurate reporting and guides units in understanding and applying data. It also acts as a strategic link between University College and Actionable Analytics to ensure coordinated reporting, evaluation, and data strategy.

The position will work in direct collaboration with the Student Experience Architect in University College to support a reimagined student-success model that unites principles of human flourishing with design thinking and evidence-driven innovation. Working across the many units within University College and other partners, this role ensures that data and evidence drive measurable improvement in how students build purpose, resilience, and belonging at ASU.

This position is expected to be on-site at ASU's Tempe campus at the Actionable Analytics office; hybrid opportunities may be available. Out-of-area candidates are welcome to apply; however, relocation expenses are not covered.

Position Salary Range: $75,000 - $80,000

Essential Duties:

Strategic Thought Leadership

  • Partner with UC leadership to identify long-term data and reporting needs.

  • Collaborate with the Student Experience Architect to ensure consistent, aligned, and customized data collection and reporting for flourishing-based practices across programs serving diverse and high-need student populations. Provide expertise and recommendations to strengthen UC's data strategy and data-informed decision-making culture.

  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of data systems, workflows, and visualization approaches.

Operational Data Reporting

  • Collect and document requirements for operational reports and dashboards.

  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of business processes and related institutional data.

  • Build, validate, maintain, and update operational reports, dashboards, and associated data assets

Evaluation Data Requests

  • Gather requirements for datasets used for evaluation and assessment.

  • Design, maintain, and refine workflows to extract evaluation-related data.

  • Communicate methodological considerations, data limitations, and appropriate interpretations to stakeholders.

Data Literacy & Training

  • Collaborate with UC units to provide training on the effective use of operational dashboards, reports, and datasets.

  • Work with stakeholders to enhance data collection strategies and promote data literacy across University College.

College-wide Dashboards

  • Identify and consolidate data needs from multiple University College units.

  • Translate combined requirements into specifications for comprehensive dashboards.

  • Leverage improved data collection methods to automate reporting and integrate multi-unit data.

Ad Hoc External / Grant Data Requests

  • Collaborate with Institutional Analysis (IA) to determine data strategy for external reporting and grant-related inquiries.

  • Develop, validate, maintain, and adjust workflows required for extracting specialized datasets.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of enterprise data governance principles, including data quality, security, lineage, metadata management, and stewardship.

  • Understanding of institutional research practices and higher-education data ecosystems (e.g., student information systems, CRM, LMS, enrollment data, retention data).

  • Familiarity with best practices in data-informed decision-making and continuous improvement frameworks.

  • Solid understanding of relational databases, data models, schemas, joins, and normalization.

  • Knowledge of query languages (e.g., SQL) and ETL/ELT processes for extracting, transforming, and preparing datasets.

  • Understanding of business intelligence (BI) concepts and tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, Looker, etc.).

  • Knowledge of operational reporting methods, key performance indicators (KPIs), and dashboard design principles.

  • Understanding of data storytelling principles and effective presentation of analytical findings.

  • Proficiency in writing SQL queries, managing data extracts, and validating datasets.

  • Skill in building dashboards, automated reports, and visual analytics using BI tools.

  • Ability to design and refine workflows for repeated data extraction and reporting.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Education, or related field AND two (2) years previous software support experience; OR Any combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved.

  • Advanced proficiency in SQL, data modeling, and relational database concepts

  • Demonstrated experience building and maintaining BI dashboards and operational reports

  • Strong background in institutional research, higher-education data, or similar analytical environments 

  • Proven ability to gather, translate, and document business requirements from multiple stakeholder groups

  • Expertise in designing, automating, and optimizing data workflows 

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to train and support non-technical audiences

  • Demonstrated ability to lead or influence strategic data initiatives

Working Environment:

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting, subject to extended periods of staying in a stationary position, manipulating a computer 75 percent; required to traverse moderate distances to perform work 10 percent.

  • Ability to clearly express oneself and effectively exchange information to perform essential functions.

  • Receives managerial review of completed activities; position does not supervise any staff positions.
