General Job Description | Database Administrator I:
This is a professional position responsible for assisting in ensuring the integrity of the university’s data. Responsible for serving as the primary database administrator for one major and one to two minor applications. Responsible for ensuring data is clearly defined, remains consistent, and provisions for data security and recovery exist; planning, maintaining, and developing databases to further the university’s efforts; and analyzing information processing needs and providing solutions which may include systems programming, training and coordination of support efforts. Works under moderate supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Reports to the Assistant Director of Enterprise Architecture.
Database Administrator II:
This is a professional position responsible for ensuring the integrity of the university’s data. Responsible for serving as the primary database administrator for two or more major and two or more minor applications. Responsible for ensuring data is clearly defined, remains consistent, and provisions for data security and recovery exist; planning, maintaining, and developing databases to further the university’s efforts; and analyzing information processing needs and providing solutions which may include systems programming, training and coordination of support efforts. Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Reports to the Assistant Director of Enterprise Architecture.
Database Administrator III:
This is a professional position responsible for serving as a lead role in ensuring the integrity of the university’s data. Responsible for ensuring data is clearly defined, remains consistent, and provisions for data security and recovery exist; planning, maintaining, and developing databases to further the university’s efforts; and analyzing information processing needs and providing solutions which may include systems programming, training and coordination of support efforts. Leads assigned database administrators in determining priorities, providing work direction, and developing skills through training. Works under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Reports to the Assistant Director of Enterprise Architecture.
Essential Job Functions | Database Administrator I:
1. Assists in ensuring databases are up and functioning properly.
2. Assists in ensuring databases are archived and backup procedures are functioning properly.
3. Provides support for IT project managers, database programmers, and web developers.
4. Provides technical support for existing and legacy systems by meeting users’ access requirements and resolving user problems.
5. Keeps databases up to date via patches and upgrades.
6. Commissions, installs, and tests new applications.
7. Maintains data standards, including adherence to FERPA and HIPAA.
8. Documents procedures required to maintain the databases and applications.
9. Ensures proper access and security is maintained for databases via regular communications with technical, applications, and operational staff.
Database Administrator II:

Provides technical support for existing and legacy systems by meeting users’ access requirements and resolving user problems.5. Keeps databases up to date via patches and upgrades.6. Commissions, installs, and tests new applications.7. Maintains data standards, including adherence to FERPA and HIPAA.8. Documents procedures required to maintain the databases and applications.9. Database Administrator III:
1. Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, university policies and procedures.2. Knowledge of, and proficiency in, relational database systems and database development tools.3. Exceptional problem solving and organizational skills.4. Ability to grasp the needs of customers and provide effective solutions.5. Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.6. Ability to work independently.7. Ability to effectively lead a team of IT professionals and/or campus users.8. Ability to set priorities and complete assignments on time.9. Ability to recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of technical problems.10. Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.
Physical Demands |
Required Education | Database Administrator I/II/III:
Bachelor’s degree in information technology or a related field is required. Related experience may be substituted for required education on a basis set forth by the Department of Human Resources.
Required Experience and Training | Database Administrator I:
No direct database experience is required.
Database Administrator II:
Three years of related experience is required. Experience in application systems analysis and database administration is required.
Database Administrator III:
Five years of related experience is required. Experience in application systems analysis and database administration is required
Preferred Qualifications | Database Administrator I:
Experience in application systems analysis and database administration is preferred. Experience planning, developing, and maintaining Oracle database environments is preferred. Training and/or certifications related to database through Oracle are preferred.
Database Administrator II/III:
Experience planning, developing and maintaining Oracle database environments is preferred. Training and/or certifications related to database through Oracle are preferred.
