Job Description Summary

Organization's Summary Statement:
The Maryland English Institute (MEI) is seeking a dynamic and experienced leader to serve as the Director. MEI provides high-quality English language instruction and assessment at the postsecondary level for non-native speakers of English, aiming to support academic, professional, and personal language development. MEI accomplishes this mission by offering a full-time, multi-level Intensive English Program, part-time courses for University of Maryland students, programs for international graduate Teaching Assistants, oral communication skill assessments for Teaching Assistants, and custom-designed programs for both UMD affiliates and external organizations. MEI delivers rigorous academic courses while fostering a positive, supportive learning environment and promoting cross-cultural understanding. The Director will lead and manage the MEI faculty and staff, be responsible for the overall operation of the Institute, and report directly to the Dean of the College of Education. The Director will support the strategic vision of the Institute and collaborate with the College of Education faculty and staff.

Responsible for managing a sub-department or sub-unit within a department or College. Sets direction for the team assigns tasks and manages project execution. Exercises latitude and independence in assignments.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
 • Ownership of short to mid-term (1-3 years) execution of functional strategy and the operational direction of the Department.
 • Problems faced are often complex and require extensive investigation and analysis.
 • Requires ability to influence others to accept practices and approaches and ability to communicate and influence executive
 leadership.
 • Builds working relationships with mid and senior-level leadership.
 • Applies advanced knowledge and understanding of concepts, principles, and technical capabilities to manage a wide variety of
 projects.
 • Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations.
 • Manages a team of professionals and support staff.
 • Other duties as assigned"

Physical Demands:
*Sedentary work is performed in a normal office environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards.

*Must be able to walk short distances, and/or drive a vehicle

Preferences :
• Ph.D. or Ed.D. in a field related to language, TESOL, multilingual learner education, or international education.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Knowledge of anti-racist pedagogy and experience integrating diversity, equity, and belonging efforts in courses, programs, or institutional processes.
• Knowledge of future trends and innovations in English language learning and higher education.
• Evidence of data-informed decision-making
• Experience working with faculty in higher education.
• Ability to forge relationships across campus and design new courses and programs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Master's degree from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Ten (10) years of professional experience managing business operations. Five (5) years of experience supervising or managing professional staff.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of business acumen to understand key business drivers, organizational communications, and data.
• Knowledge of organizational and unit performances measures.
• Knowledge of the impact and implications of decisions on leadership objectives.
• Skill in oral and written communication.
• Skill in data analytics and negotiation.
• Skill in the use of Microsoft Office products.
• Ability to exercise independent judgment and discretion.
• Ability to develop and administer new policies and procedures.
• Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, regulations, and laws.

Additional Job Details

Education:
Master's degree in a field related to language, TESOL, multilingual learner education, or international education.

Experience:
• Experience with English (as an additional language) teaching in higher education and/or leadership.
• Proven personnel supervision and team management skills
