The University Design Institute (UDI) partners with universities, higher education systems, philanthropic organizations, and national governments to co-design innovative strategies that strengthen the future of higher education. At Arizona State University (ASU), UDI's Enterprise Design Practice plays a central role in advancing the New American University model by building institutional design capacity, leading complex strategic engagements, and developing leadership talent.

UDI seeks a strategic and systems-oriented Director of the Enterprise Design Practice to lead and expand ASU's internal portfolio of enterprise design initiatives, leadership development programs, and consultative services. This role will oversee a diverse set of high-impact projects that support organizational transformation, leadership effectiveness, and a culture of innovation across the university.
The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in higher education, a strong track record leading complex, system-level initiatives, and the operational acumen to translate design and strategy into sustained institutional impact.

The Ideal Candidate Will:
  • Provide strategic design leadership, translating ASU's institutional priorities into high-impact initiatives that build enterprise design and leadership capacity across the university.
  • Oversee complex, high-stakes engagements, guiding leaders and cross-functional teams through co-design, systems thinking, and adaptive problem-solving.
  • Serve as a visible convener—leading executive-level discussions, guiding senior leaders through complex decisions, and "holding the room" in high-stakes settings to move programs and engagements forward.
  • Demonstrate excellence in service orientation, ensuring that internal ASU engagements reflect the rigor, clarity, and responsiveness of UDI's external work.
    Operates as a collaborative systems thinker, comfortable working in ambiguity, building partnerships across the institution, and advancing a culture of innovation, experimentation, and continuous learning.
  • Engage with, and learn from, other practices within UDI to inform and support Enterprise Design work while supporting other UDI practices in their offerings.

The Ideal Candidate Has:
  • Extensive experience leading enterprise-level design or organizational transformation initiatives, preferably within higher education or similarly complex environments.
  • A strong foundation in leadership development, organizational design, or change management, with demonstrated success engaging executive leaders and teams.
  • Expertise in design and systems methodologies, applied to institutional strategy, service innovation, and culture change.
  • Proven operational and people leadership skills, including strategic and fiscal management, team development, and exceptional communication abilities.

Essential Duties:
Advance Enterprise Design at ASU
  • Establish and lead a cohesive strategy for the Enterprise Design Practice that measurably advances UDI's mission and ASU's institutional priorities, strengthening the university's capacity for innovation and transformation.
Deliver High-Impact Institutional Engagements
  • Partner with senior university leaders to design and execute enterprise-level initiatives that address complex challenges, improve organizational effectiveness, and produce clear, actionable outcomes, including facilitating high-visibility meetings, workshops, and convenings that align stakeholders and sustain momentum, whether as the sole facilitator, part of a team or the lead who is helping fit between facilitated sessions.
Strengthen Leadership Programs:  
  • Oversee and continuously evolve UDI's leadership development programs (e.g., Leadership Academy, Advanced Leadership Initiative) to ensure they are outcomes-driven, fiscally sustainable, and responsive to ASU's current and future leadership needs.
Build Trusted Partnerships
  • Develop relationships with ASU leaders and internal partners, serving as a thought partner and strategic advisor. Represent UDI and the Enterprise Design Practice in high-visibility forums across ASU and with external stakeholders, as appropriate.
Ensure Operational Excellence and Sustainability
  • Lead and develop the Enterprise Design team, including project management and facilitation, while managing budgets, resources, and timelines to ensure high-quality execution, accountability, and long-term sustainability. Continuously assess impact, integrate feedback, and refine programs and practices.
Apply Design for Measurable Impact
  • Use design-based and systems methodologies to diagnose institutional needs, frame challenges, prototype solutions, and deliver measurable improvements in services, structures, and leadership practices.
Cultivate a Culture of Design and Learning
  • Build a collaborative, inclusive, and learning-oriented team culture that reflects UDI's core values and models curiosity, experimentation, and continuous improvement across the institution.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience working within higher education contexts with ASU experience preferred.
  • Master's degree in Design, Organizational Development, Education, or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience leading enterprise-wide initiatives or executive development programs.
  • Proven record of building strategic and collaborative relationships with executive leaders, subject matter experts, and other institutional partners to advance organizational goals.
  • Demonstrated executive presence, with experience presenting to, facilitating with, and influencing senior leaders and large stakeholder groups.
  • Exceptional executive-level communication skills, with the ability to craft and deliver clear, persuasive, and strategic messages to diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to align initiatives with broader UDI strategies and priorities, ensuring cohesive impact across the organization.
  • Prior experience managing complex projects within higher education or large organizations.
  • Proven ability to align internal strategy and services with an external-facing consulting mindset.
  • Strong financial and risk management acumen.
  • Experience mentoring diverse teams and developing others' design and leadership capacity.
     
Working Environment:
  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting, subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse.
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or be subject to resolution of conflicts.
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
  • Use critical thinking to make decisions and/or analyze and report data/results.
  • Infrequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 25 pounds.
  • Regular use of standard office equipment including computer workstation/laptop, printer, fax, calculator, copier, telephone, and associated peripherals.
