Discovery Education is looking for a Director of IT to join our Charlotte team and lead the IT Support and Engineering functions within the greater IT Organization. You will work directly with leadership and stakeholders with the responsibility to make sure Discovery Education’s cloud-first footprint is manageable and our people are enabled for success. This means managing and growing the people in your org, ensuring the smooth running of our technical systems, and guidance to our employees. 

This role will sit in our Charlotte HQs with a hybrid work schedule.

About the Role

  • Be a Technical Lead for a team of 5+ IT Professionals supporting Discovery Education’s global workforce.
  • Collaborate with the heads of Security, Data, Business Systems and the VP of IT to ensure Discovery Education maintains best-in-class technologies.
  • Manage information technology and computer systems, including hardware, software, network, and cloud services.
    • Keeping a tight inventory is key.
  • Experience with Office 365 administration, migration, and integration.
    • We’re Office 365 first but also use a wide range of cloud systems. No traditional data centers.
  • Proficiency in both Mac and PC operating systems and applications.
  • Plan, organize, control, and evaluate IT and electronic data operations, ensuring compliance with industry standards and best practices.
  • Manage IT staff by recruiting, training, coaching, and appraising their performance, as well as assigning and monitoring their tasks and projects.
  • Design, develop, implement, and coordinate systems, policies, and procedures to optimize the use of IT resources and improve efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Ensure security of data, network access, and backup systems, as well as implement risk management and disaster recovery plans.
  • Act in alignment with user needs and system functionality to contribute to organizational goals and objectives.
  • Identify problematic areas and implement strategic solutions in time.
  • Audit systems and assess their outcomes, as well as prepare and present reports and recommendations.
  • Manage IT budget and ensure cost-effectiveness.
  • Stay up to date with emerging technologies and trends and evaluate and recommend new solutions.

Requirements

  • You’ve managed a team of IT Professionals, including support staff and administrator staff.
  • Experience leading a remote/hybrid team.
  • You’ve been responsible for a budget and are able to craft a budget.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field.
  • Proven working experience as an IT Director or similar relevant role.
  • Expertise in management of Office 365 environments, data governance, and network administration.
  • Identity system knowledge is critical.
  • Experience in leading process improvements.
  • Zendesk is a plus.
  • Hands-on experience with computer networks, network security, and network installation.
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Experience in ITIL, PMP, CISSP, or similar.
  • Some travel both domestic and international will be required (up to 10%).
  • Legal right to work in the United States.
