Director of Data & compliance
The Director of Data & Compliance will lead KIPP St. Louis’ Data team, ensuring our schools have data they can trust, access quickly and easily, and make data-driven decisions, as well as ensure strong adherence to all state, local, and KIPP Foundation compliance. This role is cross-functional and will collaborate closely with Strategy leaders, Operations leaders, Academic leaders, School leaders, and school-based operations leads to ensure KIPP St. Louis is utilizing and maintaining its many data systems to manage academic, operational, strategic, and compliance needs. This individual will report to the Chief of Staff.
As the team leader, the Director of Data & Compliance will:
- Lead the team in data and student information systems, and compliance to federal, state, and local laws
- People Management: Directly manage, support, train, and coach the Data Reporting and Analytics Manager
- Provide professional development opportunities to ensure high performance and nurture the professional growth of the team
Job Description
Position type: Full time, 12-month exempt
We invite you to serve in the following capacities:
Data Strategy & Team Management (Lead).
- Partner with the Chief of Staff to set the strategic direction and vision for the KIPP St. Louis data team and to execute against it, including strategic planning, goal setting, and progress monitoring
- Directly manages Data Reporting and Analytics Manager
- Provide the vision, coaching, and guidance to provide world-class data support to our schools.
Student Information and Data Systems (Lead)
- Manage the student information system and ensure data integrity
- Manage data product roadmap and oversee development of data dashboards
- Oversee and support data architecture work
- Lead evaluation and implementation of systems, technologies, and practices related to data management
- Stay abreast of research and trends involving data software and systems, ensuring that current tools and technologies are shared with and incorporated into the team's work
- Streamlines processes and customizes features within PowerSchool (SIS system) to improve user experience, operational efficiency, and yield better data management practices
- Serves as regional point-person for student schedules and course assignments
- Manages the configuration of K-12 school schedules
- Partners with the Academic Team to co-create academic data reports, including, but not limited t,o attendance, suspension, assessment, and other student-level data
Student Data Integrity and Reporting Systems (Partner with Data Reporting and Analytics Manager)
- Assist the Data Reporting and Analytics Manager with annual reporting of student and staff demographics, enrollment, attendance, and suspension data, etc., to the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
- Support with maintaining the accuracy of DESE data throughout the year by communicating with school teams
- Participate in regional audits to ensure 100% accuracy of student data. Self-audits student data to ensure regional audits produce no findings
- Support with student information-specific data requests relating to compliance and reporting requirements for KIPP St. Louis (internal stakeholders, grant reports, research requests, KIPP Foundation, etc.)
- Knowledge of all state and federal reports and state reporting systems
Regional Compliance (Lead)
- Ensure compliance with local open government laws with input from KIPP’s Leadership Team and Compliance Team
- Ensure KSL is in compliance with all state and local laws under its charter or other organizing structure
- Manage efforts to meet local and state submission requirements
- Ensure compliance with local district enrollment requirements
- Manages the work of cross-functional regional teams tasked with meeting all compliance deadlines
Regional Attendance Reporting Systems (Lead)
- Prepares monthly attendance reports; weekly attendance verifications, and supports with bi-annual attendance submissions
- Supports the Mental Health Professionals at each campus with the goal of achieving high attendance by creating truancy letter templates, list of repeat truancy offenders, and attendance intervention resources.
Regional Strategic Project Management (Lead)
- Supports with the creation of dashboards and data systems to support the implementation of annual plans and 5-year strategic plan
- Leads or support with special projects related to data and strategy
Additional duties within reason may be assigned; such duties must be considered as beneficial and impactful to the mission of the organization.
Qualifications
What you bring to the table:
- Bachelor’s degree is required; Masters (Preferred)
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and Google Apps
- Strong understanding of Relational Databases
- Strong understanding of how to aggregate and cross-reference data
- SQL, Python, App Script proficiency preferred
- Proficient use of Large Language Models for improved efficiency
- Ability to work independently and with a team
- Relevant experience in any environment requiring government/funder compliance reporting a plus
- Excellent organizational, planning and implementation skills. Always think multiple steps ahead.
- Able to work humbly with multiple stakeholders ranging in knowledge and experience with data / tools
- Ability and proven track record for overseeing data collection, validation and reporting
- Ability to manage ambiguity and multiple priorities inherent in fast-paced work environments
- Ability to establish relationships and communicate effectively with multiple stakeholders
Preferred skills and qualifications include:
- Master’s degree in Education, Social Services, or similar field
- Experience with managing and entering data with at least 95% accuracy; familiarity with data management systems (PowerSchool, DeansList, Avela)
- Experience working in nonprofit or education sectors with educationally underserved students
- 2 or more years of experience in a similar role
- 2 or more years of experience working as a school-based staff member

What we bring to the table: Starting Salary is $85,000, final salary will be commensurate with experience and education.
