About Step Up Tutoring
Step Up Tutoring is a rapidly growing, technology-driven nonprofit dedicated to improving outcomes for elementary and middle school students in under-resourced communities through virtual high-impact tutoring and mentorship. Our unique approach pairs adult volunteers and college students, supported by Federal Work-Study and scholarships, with students for one-on-one tutoring to build skills in math and reading, enhance academic confidence, and foster positive mentoring relationships. Since its founding in partnership with the Los Angeles Unified School District in 2020, Step Up has expanded across multiple states and provided 200,000 tutoring hours to more than 5,000 students.
Position Overview
The Director of Learning Innovation will lead the design and implementation of Step Up’s academic program and instructional systems to strengthen our growing national tutoring corps. The ideal candidate has strong expertise in curriculum and pedagogy, experience using technology to improve learning, and a commitment to scaling impact by combining the power of human connection with effective tools. The Director will ensure Step Up provides clear, high-quality curriculum resources for reading and math (grades 2-8), along with effective tutor training and assessment systems. They will work closely with Operations, Product, and Engineering teams to thoughtfully integrate AI-powered tools that support tutor effectiveness and student learning. Responsibilities:
Curriculum and Instruction Leadership:
- Lead selection, implementation, and monitoring of standards-aligned math and reading curricula, ensuring alignment with Step Up’s use case and effectiveness at driving literacy and math gains for students in grades 2-8.
- Ensure instructional quality and consistency through evidence-based practices and innovative design.
- Incorporate effective mentorship tools and practices into session structure, supporting tutors to drive social-emotional skill development and relationship building.
Tutor Training, Quality Assurance:
- Design & oversee best-in-class tutor training programs, ensuring alignment to Step Up’s use case and user needs.
- Lead ongoing development of tutor support resources and quality assurance.
- Collaborate with Step Up’s AI Labs team to integrate scalable, AI-enhanced tutor coaching and feedback solutions.
Assessment & Data-Driven Support:
- Lead selection and implementation of student assessment and progress monitoring tools to track and improve outcomes.
- Develop systems enabling tutors to use assessment data for personalized, adaptive instruction.
Program Leadership:
- Lead decisions on program delivery models through a collaborative approach working with cross-functional partners in Operations and Product (as well as Step Up’s new AI Labs team), continuously iterative toward organizational goals.
- Engage with users to ensure curriculum and program decisions are aligned with their needs and goals.
- Effectively steward Step Up’s Program Advisory Committee, engaging a diverse slate of expert advisors and Board members in key program decisions
- Manage, mentor, and develop program staff, fostering a culture of collaboration, professional growth and excellence.
Qualifications:
- 7+ years of experience in curriculum development, educational program design, or instructional training design
- Strong product sensibility and experience in EdTech product development, with a track record of designing and scaling technology-enabled academic programs that drive user engagement and learning outcomes across diverse populations.
- Expertise in K-8 math and reading curriculum & instruction, pedagogy and standards
- Experience as a tutor or educator with a track record of driving engagement & impact
- Experience with assessment tools, data-driven instruction, and educational analytics
- Experience designing effective training for novice or non-expert educators preferred
- Experience with educational technology integration including AI-powered tools preferred
- Exceptional leadership, project management, strategic thinking and communication skills
- Commitment to educational equity and innovation
- Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree in Education, Curriculum and Instruction, or related field preferred

Compensation & Benefits
- Salary Range: $105,000–$160,000, depending on experience, plus eligibility for performance-based bonus.
