JOB SUMMARY
At Summit K12, we believe that every student can do well in school if instruction is tailored to their unique learning needs and they receive the encouragement to strive and achieve. Our learning programs provide teachers with the ability to differentiate instruction, monitor progress, and support learners in their journey toward success.
From English learners, multilingual students, bilingual students and dual language learners who are struggling to read or write, Summit K12’s online, standards-based supplemental curriculum will close gaps and ensure growth for all students.
We are seeking a Director of Product Design to lead experience architecture and platform design strategy across our multi-product K–12 learning platform.
This role owns the end-to-end user experience of the Summit K12 platform, including shared services, cross-product workflows, design systems, and interaction standards. The Director of Product Design ensures that our platform operates as a cohesive, scalable system rather than a collection of independent tools.
This leader sets and enforces experience standards across products and serves as the authority on cross-product UX alignment, workflow integrity, and design governance. In partnership with Product and Engineering leadership, this role ensures that platform capabilities support instructional clarity, operational efficiency, and long-term scalability.
In addition to leading the Product Design function, this role mentors the Platform Product Manager and elevates decision discipline at the platform layer.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Platform Experience Architecture
- Define and evolve the platform-wide experience architecture across all Summit K12 products and shared services.
- Establish design standards governing navigation systems, dashboards, reporting, permissions, and workflow logic.
- Ensure cross-product consistency while supporting role-based experiences for students, educators, and administrators.
- Translate company strategy and instructional priorities into scalable interaction models and platform patterns.
- Prevent fragmentation by aligning new product initiatives to established experience frameworks.
2. Design Systems & Governance
- Lead the Product Design team, including ownership of the design system, component libraries, accessibility standards, and research practices.
- Ensure alignment between design artifacts and production implementation.
- Implement governance processes that maintain system integrity without slowing product delivery.
- Oversee usability research and validation efforts that inform platform-level improvements.
- Maintain compliance with accessibility and responsive design standards across products.
3. Platform Product Partnership & Mentorship
- Partner closely with the Platform Product Manager to align roadmap priorities with platform architecture and experience standards.
- Provide strategic mentorship that strengthens decision frameworks, prioritization clarity, and cross-team alignment.
- Guide shared services strategy, including user identity, permissions, dashboards, reporting systems, and personalization layers.
- Elevate platform-level discovery and definition for initiatives impacting multiple product lines.
4. Instructional Workflow & Interaction Design
- Ensure workflows support authentic instructional practice and transparent student progress tracking.
- Design feedback, progression, and reporting systems that reinforce learning objectives.
- Collaborate with Curriculum and Academic teams to align platform interactions with instructional outcomes.
- Continuously identify and remove friction across teacher, student, and administrator workflows.
5. Integrations & AI-Enabled Experience
- Establish experience standards for third-party integrations and external data exchanges.
- Ensure integrated workflows are clear, reliable, and aligned to platform patterns.
- Collaborate with AI and data teams to guide the responsible implementation of AI-enabled features.
- Evaluate the impact of AI-driven functionality on user trust, transparency, and workflow coherence.
6. Cross-Functional Leadership
- Partner with Engineering to ensure platform design decisions are scalable and technically sound.
- Work with Product Directors to align roadmap decisions to shared platform standards.
- Incorporate district and field feedback into platform-level improvements.
- Serve as the decision authority for cross-product design standards and experience trade-offs.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required Experience
- 8+ years of experience in Product Design, UX leadership, or Platform Product Design within SaaS or EdTech environments.
- Demonstrated ownership of cross-product experience architecture in a multi-product platform.
- Experience leading or scaling a design system across complex applications.
- Proven ability to define and enforce design governance across multiple teams.
- Experience mentoring senior designers and partnering closely with product managers.
- Strong understanding of shared services architecture, including identity, permissions, dashboards, reporting, and workflow systems.
- Experience collaborating with Engineering on complex, multi-team initiatives.
Preferred Experience
- Experience within K–12 digital learning platforms or learning management systems.
- Exposure to AI-enabled product capabilities or adaptive learning systems.
- Experience evaluating third-party integrations within SaaS platforms.
- Familiarity with district reporting requirements and instructional progress monitoring.
Skills & Atributes
- A systems thinker who understands how platform architecture and user experience intersect.
- Comfortable owning standards and driving cross-product alignment.
- Skilled at mentoring both design and product leaders.
- Confident making trade-offs visible and maintaining platform coherence at scale.
- Motivated by building high-quality learning experiences that serve educators and students.
SUCCESS INDICATORS:
- A cohesive and scalable experience architecture across all Summit K12 products.
- Strong adoption and usability of shared platform services.
- Reduced UX fragmentation and clearer cross-role workflows.
- Mature design governance embedded across product teams.
- Platform enhancements that measurably improve instructional clarity and district confidence.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:
