Scope of Job | Directs and provides strategic leadership and vision for the Office of Student Media, fostering an educational environment where students learn to produce high-quality, ethical journalism.
Description of Duties | Responsible for providing strategic oversight and vision for the Office of Student Media that serves the university community through independent, student-produced news and information. Establishes strategic business objectives to ensure alignment with each unit’s annual goals and the department’s long-term vision. Establishes and maintains high standards of journalism, advertising and professional conduct for the Office of Student Media, with a strong emphasis on student engagement and experiential learning. Prepares and manages annual budgets for each unit; monitors expenditures to ensure fiscal responsibility. Leads student journalists in covering campus events, news, and issues while maintaining editorial independence. Directs all student media units, including newsroom, photography, advertising, graphics/production and business operations. Provides guidance to employees on digital media practices, including Search Engine Optimization writing, online reporting, social media content creation and management, and the integration of multimedia elements, such as text, video, audio and interactive tools to publish content across digital platforms. Leads and cultivates the professional development and oversight of assigned staff across multiple media platforms including magazine, newspaper, radio and television, ensuring proficiency in all aspects of broadcast journalism, including on-air presentation, scriptwriting, video production, audio editing and newsroom operations and ensures functions are in compliance with all applicable regulations. Develops and implements operating policies and procedures for Student Media. Oversees assessment and evaluation of student media programs and learning outcomes, using data-driven analysis to improve operations and student development. Assesses, compiles and submits regular reports of departmental activities and makes recommendation for program effectiveness. Provides business, marketing and journalistic guidance and ensures compliance with regulatory standards such as media law and press rights. Leads the recruitment, training, supervision, and evaluation of all assigned staff. Plans and manages departmental initiatives, including skill-building workshops, student recognition events, and other special projects. Coordinates with various departmental areas when appropriate. Serves as liaison to university administration, student media committees, student groups, faculty and staff; serves on a variety of university-wide committees, as assigned. Fosters relationships with external media organizations for collaboration and student networking. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education | Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communication, Public Relations or related field from an accredited university.
Preferred Education | Master’s degree in Journalism, Communication, Public Relations or related field from an accredited university.
Licenses/Certifications | None.
Required Experience | Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in one or more areas of media production such as news writing, website development, advertising, marketing and/or public relations to include budget management; or Three (3) years of the required experience with a Master’s degree in Journalism, Communication, Public Relations or related field from an accredited university.
Preferred Experience | Experience in media production within an institution of higher education or professional association. Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, radio broadcasting software, and content management systems. Understanding of media law and student press rights. Familiarity with radio and TV production, scriptwriting, on-air presentation, and studio management. Understanding of SEO practices for digital journalism.
Equipment | Use of standard Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and student media related equipment (Computer, DSLR Cameras and Video Cameras)
Preferred: Experienced with tools such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Premiere Pro and Audition) Broadcast Equipment Radio and television studio equipment operation and troubleshooting.
Working Conditions | Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Office Environment; some travel and weekend work is required. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley.
Other | Knowledge of online content creation, video/audio editing, and content management systems (e.g., WordPress). Proficiency in social media strategy, content creation, and engagement analytics. Ability to design and analyze learning outcomes and program effectiveness. Ability to manage a departmental budget and use resources effectively. Strong conflict resolution and management skills needed. Strong understanding of professional print and digital newsroom workflows; demonstrated supervisory skills in multi-platform news environment; ability to manage and interpret market and readership data. Knowledge in all supervised areas, including newsroom operations, advertising, production, business and marketing. Strong command of Associated Press Style, editing, reporting, and newsroom standards.
