First Year Advisor Full Description
The University of Oregon is hiring a First Year Advisor in Eugene, OR. This is a regular, ongoing, full-time (1.0 FTE) position, with 5 positions available across the Lundquist College of Business, the College of Arts and Sciences (Natural Sciences), and the School of Journalism and Communication, working in collaboration with Undergraduate Education and Student Success (UESS).
Position Summary
The First-Year Advisor supports first-year student retention and persistence through proactive, coordinated, and equity-minded advising within an academic school or college. This role provides direct advising and early, sustained engagement with an identified first-year student caseload, collaborating with UESS, school/college advising teams, and campus partners to support coordinated outreach, referrals, case management, and first-year student intervention strategies.
Responsibilities
- Provide proactive first-year advising by offering individualized guidance on academic goals, course selection, study strategies, degree planning, major and minor exploration, career exploration, and engagement in campus life.
- Support retention and persistence by engaging an identified first-year caseload, conducting proactive outreach, making referrals, and contributing to coordinated advising interventions.
- Contribute to school/college advising operations by assisting with advising, registration, orientation programming, peak registration periods, and unit-specific first-year programming.
- Advance shared advising practices by maintaining accurate advising records, using university-wide advising tools, participating in school/college and cross-unit meetings, and supporting communication planning, documentation, projects, and presentations.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree.
- One year of academic advising experience in higher education or two years of professional experience providing educational, social, or human services.
Professional Competencies
- Broad knowledge of student development principles applicable to an educational setting.
- Basic understanding of issues facing diverse student populations (e.g. low SES, first-gen., underrepresented identities, non-traditional, under-prepared, etc.)
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in both one-on-one and group settings.
- An understanding of policies and procedures within an academic setting.
- Ability to prioritize and multi-task in a fast-paced, detailed-oriented and time-sensitive work environment.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality, including understanding FERPA and other relevant policies, procedures and/or regulations that guide interactions with students.
- Desire to seek out opportunities to gain experience working and collaborating in diverse and inclusive settings, with a willingness to invest in personal continual improvement.
Preferred Qualifications
- A Master’s degree.
- Advising experience at the University of Oregon.
- Experience working in higher education and familiarity with university systems and structures.
- Experience working in a university quarter system.
