  • Knowledge of: Relevant UPPSs, IRS rules, optional retirement program regulations, 457 Plan, state and federal laws, workers’ compensation issues, leave issues, employment law, COBRA, insurance and benefits related issues.
  • Skill in: Interacting courteously with employees, interpreting requests for information, providing training to others, establishing rapport and working as a team member, prioritizing workload, using Microsoft applications.
  • Ability to: Update and maintain databases, maintain confidentiality, convey information regarding university policies and procedures, perform intermediate math, read and interpret policies, procedures and requests, multitask
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to build constructive and effective relationships while using diplomacy and tact to find common ground in resolving issues and diffusing high-tension situations comfortably
  • Must be cooperative and approachable, able to gain trust and support to collaborate effectively

Responsible for providing a variety of Human Resources services according to assigned area under minimum supervision.
Job Duties Job Summary
The Benefits Representative, under general supervision, provides assistance in the utilization
and understanding of benefit plans. Serves as a resource for employee benefits information and
processes, which may include new employee orientation, counseling employees and retirees on
group insurance or other employee benefit options, assisting with claim issues, entering benefit information into a database, reviewing and resolving benefit reports, and assisting with annual benefit enrollment processes. Serves as a resource for leave and time administration including data entry, policy and state compliance and other leave processes.

Job Duties
  • Serves as a resource and assists with new employee orientation (coordinates attendance, follows up on required hiring paperwork, maintains information in the online course, and facilitates Q&A sessions)
  • Processes new hire and annual enrollment paperwork
  • Assists employees and retirees in resolving insurance-related benefits issues, correcting data,
  • processing forms, and coding information into a database in accordance with System policies and
  • regulations
  • Reviews daily, weekly, and monthly reports to address errors
  • Assists with resolving claims issues
  • Participates in planning for Annual Enrollment period
  • Assists with drafting benefit communications, offering special programs, and planning benefit fairs
  • Coordinate prior state service verification requests with other State of Texas agencies
  • Oversees time and leave processes, procedures and policy compliance
  • Perform other duties as assigned
