Job Summary
Information Security Engineer

The University of Utah is seeking a Research Authentication System Administrator to design and manage our IAM ecosystem in a dynamic research environment with HPC clusters, diverse repositories, and specialized applications.

you will work to eliminate “authentication friction” for our university research while continuing a rigorous security posture. You will serve as the primary systems engineer for our Okta/Auth0 tenants, acting as a bridge between complex security systems and the specialized needs of the research community and the University’s IAM services.

About UIT: University Information Technology (UIT), the central IT service provider for the University of Utah, reports to the U’s Chief Information Officer and is responsible for many of the U’s shared IT services including the wired and wireless network; Campus Information Services (CIS) portal; UMail, telephone, and online collaboration; digital learning technologies; information security; software licensing; and a host of other IT systems and services.

Responsibilities
Information Security Engineer

IAM Architecture & Administration: Manage and fine-tune Okta and/or Auth0 environments, including tenant management, policy definition, and advanced API configurations.

Lifecycle Management: Automate user onboarding and offboarding using SCIM (System for Cross-domain Identity Management) and implement Just-In-Time (JIT) provisioning for project-based access.

Compliance & Audit: Assist with internal and external compliance audits, making sure that authentication logs and access controls meet institutional and federal research standard

Research Integration: Lead the onboarding and configuration of authentication for scientific workflows, assuring secure access to HPC resources and multi-cloud data platforms.

Protocol Expertise: Implement and troubleshoot industry-standard protocols, including SAML, OIDC/OAuth 2.0, LDAP, and RADIUS, to ensure interoperability across platforms.

SSO Strategy: Design and maintain Single Sign-On (SSO) integrations, including enterprise connections and self-service portals.

 • Compliance & Governance: Ensure all identity controls align with University Policy 4-004 and meet regulatory requirements including HIPAA and NIST 800-171.
 • Incident Response & Troubleshooting: Provide Tier 3 support for complex authentication issues, token/claims failures, and identity-related security incidents.
 • Architecture & Documentation: Maintain comprehensive technical documentation, including architecture diagrams, integration standards, and operational runbooks.

Information Security Engineer, IV: Requires a bachelor’s (or equivalency) + 8 years or a master’s (or equivalency) + 6 years of directly related work experience.

Preferences
* Automation: Experience with Octa Services, Terraform, Python, or PowerShell for automating IAM workflows.
* Research/HPC Knowledge: Familiarity with Linux-based research environments and High-Performance Computing.
* Regulatory Knowledge: Experience working within regulated data frameworks such as HIPAA, GDPR, or NIST 800-171.
* Vaulting Solutions: Experience with BeyondTrust or similar secrets management tools.
