Position Summary
The Instructional Designer is a key member of IEM's Talent Development function, responsible for designing, developing, and continuously improving engaging and effective learning experiences that support organizational goals and drive measurable performance outcomes across our operations.
 
Working in close partnership with subject matter experts (SMEs), Production, Engineering, Quality, and operational leadership, the Instructional Designer translates complex technical and operational content into high-quality learning solutions — including e-learning modules, instructor-led training materials, job aids, assessments, and multimedia content — delivered across online, in-person, and hybrid formats.
 
The ideal candidate brings a strong foundation in instructional design methodology, hands-on experience with modern authoring and multimedia tools, and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. This individual is a creative problem-solver who is passionate about learner experience, data-driven improvement, and building a world-class TD function at IEM.
 
Key Responsibilities
Conduct Learning Needs Analysis Partner with the Learning Program Managers, SMEs, and operational stakeholders to identify performance gaps, assess training needs, and define clear, measurable learning objectives. Lead SME intake calls and discovery sessions to gather the technical and operational content required to develop accurate, relevant training solutions.

Design Instructional Strategies Apply proven instructional design methodologies — including ADDIE, SAM, and Bloom's Taxonomy — to develop learner-centered instructional strategies that address specific learning objectives and align with IEM's business goals. Design for multiple modalities including instructor-led, e-learning, and blended learning formats.

Develop Engaging Learning Content Create high-quality, multimedia learning experiences using industry-standard authoring and production tools, including Articulate 360, Synthesia, DeepHow, and MS Office. Develop a full range of learning materials including e-learning modules, facilitator guides, participant handouts, job aids, competency assessments, and video-based learning content. Utilize audio-visual equipment (camera, gimbal, noise-canceling microphone, iPad) to produce professional-grade video demonstrations and recordings.

Facilitate Train-the-Trainer Sessions Design and deliver Train-the-Trainer programs to equip TD Training Specialists and subject matter experts with the skills, materials, and confidence needed to deliver training effectively and consistently across all facilities.
Evaluate & Continuously Improve Learning Solutions Implement robust evaluation strategies — including knowledge checks, skills assessments, and performance metrics — to measure learning outcomes and program effectiveness. Leverage learner feedback, quality data, and business performance indicators to continuously refine and improve content and delivery methods.

Manage LMS & Learning Technology Utilize the Learning Management System (LMS) to build, deploy, track, and report on training programs. Maintain accurate course libraries, learner records, and completion data in support of operational and audit requirements.
Lead Project Management & Cross-Functional Collaboration Manage multiple instructional design projects simultaneously, ensuring on-time delivery, quality standards, and alignment with organizational priorities. Collaborate with cross-functional teams across U.S. and Canadian facilities to ensure learning solutions are consistent, scalable, and operationally relevant.

  • This role will not be responsible for supervision/management of other people.
 
Qualifications
Required
  • Bachelors level degree or equivalent in Instructional Design, Educational Technology, Adult Education, Communications, or a related field — or equivalent combination of formal training and professional experience.
  • 2+ years of experience in instructional design, curriculum development, or a related L&D role.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with e-learning authoring tools such as Articulate 360, DeepHow, Synthesia, or equivalent platforms.
  • Working knowledge of instructional design models and frameworks including ADDIE, SAM, and Bloom's Taxonomy.
  • Experience developing a range of learning materials including e-learning modules, facilitator guides, job aids, and competency assessments.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English, with the ability to present and explain instructional design concepts clearly to SMEs, stakeholders, and operational leaders.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work on-site, with travel as required.
 
Preferred
  • 3+ years of experience in instructional design, with a portfolio demonstrating a range of learning solutions across multiple modalities.
  • Experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Proficiency in graphic design and multimedia production tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, or Vyond.
  • Experience operating audio-visual production equipment including cameras, gimbals, and professional microphones.
  • Familiarity with LMS platforms for course deployment, learner tracking, and reporting.
  • Knowledge of adult learning principles and learner experience (LX) design best practices.
  • Professional certification in instructional design or L&D (e.g., ATD CPTD, IDOL Academy, or equivalent).
 
Physical Demands
  • Primarily required to sit for extended periods of desk-based work including instructional design, content development, and LMS administration (estimated 70–80% of working time).
  • Regularly required to stand, walk, and move throughout office and production floor environments during SME sessions, video production, and training observations (estimated 20–30% of working time).
  • Occasionally required to set up, operate, and transport audio-visual production equipment including cameras, tripods, gimbals, and related accessories.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift, carry, or move equipment or training materials weighing up to 25 lbs. (approx. 11 kg).
  • Requires prolonged close visual acuity for extended periods, including screen-based content development, video editing, and detailed review of training materials.
  • Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) when present on the production floor, including safety glasses, hearing protection, and safety footwear.
 
Location
  • The position is either to be worked in Jacksonville, Florida or remote in the South-Eastern United States with ability to travel to IEM sites as needed, but may require up to 10% travel to IEM facilities, supplier sites, compliance audits or conferences.
  • This position is not available for California residents.
