We are looking for a contract instructional designer to help revise a year-long Arabic 1 course for high school students. Candidates should be willing to participate in a live interview prior to being offered the role.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Read and review standards outlined in the
Michigan Virtual Style Guide, including
AI guidance, accessibility requirements, and course development best practices.Complete required training with support from the Michigan Virtual Instructional Product Development team.Review the existing two-semester Arabic 1 course and associated documents to become familiar with the course structure, objectives, instructional approach, and assessments.Collaborate with a Subject Matter Expert to ensure that learning objectives are measurable and align with the applicable Michigan content standards and course assessments.Provide instructional design guidance and feedback to the Subject Matter Expert to ensure that course scripts (content, activities, assessments, and resources) are instructionally sound and align with Michigan Virtual’s quality and brand standards.Review existing course links, videos, and instructional resources for functionality, accuracy, and relevance, and update or replace them as needed.Coordinate the replacement of approximately 112 YouTube videos with content that supports the instructional purpose of each lesson and meet Michigan Virtual’s accessibility and brand standards.Develop course content in an LMS using approved technologies. All required licenses will be provided to you for the duration of this project. Coordinate with the Subject Matter Expert, course development staff, and other project partners to address feedback and maintain consistency across both semesters.Review completed course materials for instructional quality, alignment, accessibility, consistency, and adherence to project requirements.Follow Michigan Virtual course development processes, templates, accessibility standards, and quality expectations throughout the project.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERTISE Demonstrated ability to explain knowledge of instructional design and learning principles. Demonstrated knowledge of assessment methodology and experience with online assessment.Demonstrated attention to detail; assuring everything is done correctly. Demonstrated skill in writing design specifications, course content, and project proposals. Demonstrated ability to review and revise scripts written by a Subject Matter Expert. Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to work well with a remote team. Demonstrated ability to use learning management systems (prefer knowledge of
Brightspace) for course creation. Demonstrated ability to use course creation and editing applications such as
CourseArc,
Storyline, and
Camtasia when creating online instruction.Demonstrated ability to use
Microsoft Office or
Google Workspace applications.Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups of stakeholders, students, teachers, and staff. Demonstrated knowledge of current WCAG standards and designing accessible user experiences.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, CERTIFICATIONS, & LICENSURES (minimum requirements):Bachelor’s degree with 9 credits in university coursework addressing instructional design or educational technology OR Bachelor’s Degree with a certificate in instructional design or educational technology; and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Strongly prefer a Master’s degree in instructional design, educational technology, or another related field.
TIME COMMITTMENT
This project is targeted to take 6-8 months from start to finish.Expectation to commit to approximately 20 hours per week on average.You will be asked to meet once a week with the instructional designer for approximately 1 hour during the hours of 9:00 am – 5:00 pm EST. Must commit to a schedule and meet deadlines, but are free to work on your own time.This is a remote, independent contractor position.
COMPENSATION
The project will be broken up into multiple milestones, which can be billed as completed throughout the project. Total compensation: Approx $20,000.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
English level: Fluent Arabic level: Fluent Experience writing curriculum for or teaching at a high school level
