Job Description
The University of Tennessee is seeking an Instructional Designer and Developer to serve on the Interactive Learning Technologies Team within Digital Learning. This role partners with faculty, media teams, and learning technology staff to design and develop engaging interactive learning experiences that support high-quality online programs. The person in this position will help advance Chancellor Plowman's strategic goal of expanding educational opportunities beyond the Knoxville campus through innovative online learning experiences.
The ideal candidate combines instructional design knowledge with strong interactive development skills and experience using eLearning technologies, accessibility standards, and Canvas LMS to create polished, student-centered learning experiences.
Responsibilities
Interactive Learning Development
• Design, develop, implement, and maintain Interactive Learning Objects (ILOs) and engaging digital learning experiences using tools such as Articulate 360, H5P, Materia, and other instructional technologies for delivery within Canvas LMS
• Develop simulations, virtual tours, scenario-based learning, and interactive media projects
• Develop pre-production materials such as flowcharts, storyboard/scripts for eLearning projects.
• Engage in professional development activities related to online and hybrid teaching and learning, instructional design and educational technology in order to stay current in the field
Instructional Design Support
• Collaborate with instructional designers and faculty to conceptualize, design and develop interactive activities
• Apply instructional design best practices to improve learner engagement and accessibility
• Assist in translating faculty content into engaging online learning experiences
• Support quality assurance reviews for instructional consistency, usability, and accessibility compliance
Collaboration & Communication
• Work closely with instructional designers, media developers, visual designers, and faculty partners
• Participate in project planning meetings and production consultations
• Document development processes and maintain organized project records
• Communicate project status updates and identify production risks or dependencies
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Instructional Design, Education, Educational Technology, Communications, or related field (Master’s preferred)
Experience:
- Experience applying instructional design principles and models ( ADDIE, SAM, or Backward Design).
- Experience developing Interactive Learning Objects (ILOs) using Articulate Storyline and Rise
- Experience working directly with faculty, instructors, subject matter experts, or stakeholders to design and develop learning experiences
- Experience using a Learning Management System, like Canvas or a comparable
software, including course setup and SCORM integration. - Experience designing engaging online learning experiences
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Strong understanding of online learning, accessibility, and Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
- Proficiency in Articulate Storyline 360 and Rise 360
- Proficiency with SCORM packaging, testing, and troubleshooting
- Ability to translate complex information into engaging instructional materials
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Strong collaboration and consultation skills

Preferred Qualifications
Education: Master’s degree in Instructional Design, Education, Educational Technology,
Communications, or related field
Experience:
- Experience with additional eLearning authoring tools such as H5P, Materia, Genially, or similar technologies
- Experience developing simulations, scenario-based learning, virtual tours, or other interactive media
- Experience with media production workflows and asset integration (video, audio, animation)
- Experience with JavaScript customization, SCORM API calls, and/or Canvas API integration
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator)
- Strong visual design skills, including layout, typography, color theory, and UX/UI best practices
- Familiarity with emerging instructional technologies and interactive learning tools
Work Location
- Remote, This position is eligible for fully remote work for candidates located in the United States
Compensation and Benefits
- UT market range: MR 10
- Target Salary Range: $60,000-$65,000
