Job Summary-
The Instructional Designer – Field Operations is responsible for designing, developing, and evaluating high-quality learning experiences for field operations, Safety, Compliance, and technical-related training that drive performance improvement and business results at AmeriGas. Applying adult learning principles, instructional design methodologies, and industry best practices, this role creates engaging, effective training programs in multiple modalities including eLearning, instructor-led training, virtual training, microlearning, and blended approaches. Up to 20% travel required.
Essential Functions-
Learning Analysis & Instructional Design
Conduct front-end analysis to identify performance gaps, collaborate with stakeholders to define learning objectives aligned to business goals, and analyze target audience characteristics to inform design decisions. Recommend appropriate interventions including training solutions and non-training alternatives such as job aids, process improvements, or coaching when applicable.
Multi-Modal Content Development
Design and develop comprehensive learning solutions using instructional design models (ADDIE, SAM) across multiple modalities including eLearning courses with multimedia and assessments, instructor-led training materials, virtual training programs, microlearning modules, and blended learning programs. Create engaging, learner-centric content using authoring tools (Articulate 360, Adobe Captivate) that meets regulatory requirements and follows adult learning principles.
Assessment & Evaluation
Design valid and reliable assessments (knowledge checks, skills demonstrations, simulations) aligned to learning objectives and develop evaluation strategies using Kirkpatrick's four levels to measure reaction, learning, behavior change, and business results. Analyze evaluation data and conduct pilot testing to measure training effectiveness, demonstrate ROI, and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
Subject Matter Expert Collaboration
Partner with SMEs from safety, operations, technical services, and other departments to facilitate knowledge extraction sessions and translate technical expertise into effective training content. Guide SMEs through review and validation processes while educating them on adult learning principles, incorporating their feedback while maintaining instructional integrity and learner-centered design.
Project Management & Quality Assurance
Manage multiple concurrent instructional design projects from intake through publication, meeting deadlines and quality standards while coordinating with multimedia specialists, graphic designers, LMS specialists, and cross-functional teams. Maintain comprehensive project documentation (design documents, storyboards, scripts, version control) and ensure all content follows established standards, templates, and style guides for consistency across programs.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities-
Strong foundation in learning science, adult learning principles, and instructional design theories
Proficiency with instructional design models (ADDIE, SAM, Agile Learning Design, Design Thinking)
Expert-level proficiency with eLearning authoring tools (Articulate 360 suite strongly preferred)
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, especially PowerPoint for presentation design
Understanding of visual design principles, multimedia integration, and user experience (UX) best practices
Basic video editing skills and experience with multimedia tools (Camtasia, Premiere, Audacity, etc.)
Proficiency with project management
Proficiency using AI tools (e.g., Claude, Copilot) to accelerate content drafting, storyboarding, and course development while applying sound instructional design judgment to ensure accuracy, quality, and learner effectiveness.
Education and Experience-
Bachelor's degree in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, Education, Training & Development, or related field required
Minimum 3+ years of professional experience in instructional design with a proven portfolio of developed learning solutions
CPTD (Certified Professional in Talent Development), CPLP (Certified Professional in Learning and Performance), or similar
Demonstrated experience using AI-powered tools to support content development, with the ability to critically evaluate and refine AI-generated outputs to meet instructional design standards and organizational quality requirements.
