The Lead Instructional Designer / AI Learning Engineer serves as the senior member of the CITL team and the university’s primary strategist for AI-enhanced pedagogy. This role combines hands-on instructional design leadership with technical fluency to evaluate, implement, and train faculty on AI tools and methodologies that improve learning outcomes.

The Lead coordinates the work of three Senior Instructional Designers, sets quality standards for the curriculum conversion project, and serves as the Provost’s advisor on learning innovation.

Key Responsibilities 
  • Lead the strategic integration of AI tools (LLM-based tutoring, automated formative assessment, adaptive learning pathways, AI-assisted content generation) into graduate curriculum across all four schools.
  • Develop and maintain an AI integration framework and playbook that enables the three Senior IDs to apply AI-enhanced design patterns within their school clusters.
  • Coordinate the team’s work on the 7-week session conversion, ensuring consistency in course architecture, learning outcome alignment, and assessment design across programs.
  • Design and deliver faculty professional development on AI-augmented teaching, prompt engineering for educators, and ethical AI use in academic settings.
  • Establish quality assurance protocols for course design, including peer review workflows, accessibility audits, and alignment with HU’s accreditation standards.
  • Stay current on learning science research, emerging EdTech, and AI developments; translate findings into actionable design improvements.
  • Serve as liaison between CITL and academic leadership (Deans, Associate Provost) on curricular innovation initiatives.
 
Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Instructional Design, Learning Sciences, Educational Technology, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of instructional design experience, with at least 2 years in higher education.
  • Demonstrated experience integrating AI/ML tools into learning design workflows (e.g., GPT-based content tools, adaptive platforms, learning analytics dashboards).
  • Deep working knowledge of Canvas LMS and familiarity with Microsoft Teams as a synchronous delivery platform.
  • Experience leading or coordinating a team of instructional designers or learning technologists.
  • Fluency in backward design (Wiggins & McTighe), competency-based frameworks, and accelerated/compressed course models.
 
Preferred Qualifications
  • Doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) in a relevant field.
  • Experience with prompt engineering, fine-tuning LLMs for educational applications, or building AI-powered learning tools.
  • Familiarity with MSCHE accreditation standards.
  • Experience with learning analytics platforms (e.g., Canvas Data, Panopto Analytics) and evidence-based course improvement cycles.
