Job Description:
Salary Range: $62,000 - $68,000 per year; depending on experience.
The Thunderbird School of Global Management is seeking a Learning Experience Designer to support the design and delivery of engaging, learner-centered educational experiences across online, hybrid, and immersive formats. Central to this role is providing expertise in the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS), ensuring effective setup and maintenance of courses each semester, supporting smooth functionality and consistent learner experience. Working closely with faculty, subject matter experts, and academic leadership, the Learning Experience Designer will apply instructional design principles, leverage emerging technologies, and promote accessibility and quality in course development. By combining exceptional attention to detail with a learner-focused mindset, this position contributes to the continuous improvement of Thunderbird's academic offerings, ensuring they remain innovative, effective, and aligned with institutional and accreditation standards as well as the school's global mission.

Essential Duties:
- Support new faculty during onboarding by providing access to prior course materials, coordinating with relevant units to facilitate their systems' access, and offering introductory training on essential course management tasks.
- Collaborate with faculty to update syllabi using the most current institutional template, ensuring alignment with university policies and course objectives.
- Build and refresh Canvas course shells each semester, ensuring current syllabi, assignments, and due dates are accurately reflected, and maintain supplemental course materials such as course packs to ensure accuracy and relevance.
- Set up and manage Canvas gradebooks with correct weighting and categories and provide troubleshooting support for faculty on grading and submission issues.
- Create and manage rubrics in Canvas by building or updating criteria, attaching rubrics to assignments, and ensuring alignment with learning outcomes and grading practices.
- Collaborate with the Academic Operations team to verify classroom assignments and ensure they are accurately reflected in course syllabi and Canvas course shells.
- Provide general training and troubleshooting support to faculty on any Canvas-related issues or other course-related tasks.
- Provide consultation and support to faculty and subject matter experts on instructional design, technology integration, and use of instructional tools.
- Design and enhance Canvas course shells with clean, professional layouts that follow accessibility standards and brand guidelines, including banners and course cards that support intuitive navigation and a consistent learner experience.
- Remain current on Canvas LMS updates and institutional policies, ensuring consistent application across courses and communicating relevant changes to faculty.
- Support faculty in implementing student accessibility accommodations in alignment with Student Accessibility and Inclusive Learning Services (SAILS) guidelines, ensuring equitable access to course materials and learning experiences.
- Foster effective, professional, and respectful working relationships with faculty, staff, and administration to ensure smooth collaboration on course design, instructional technology, and academic operations
Additional Duties:
- Assist faculty in developing or refining course learning outcomes and ensure alignment between instructional content, course objectives, and program learning outcomes.
- Collaborate with faculty to design and develop effective learning materials and assessments that meet course, institutional, and accreditation standards.
- Provide basic video editing and media support to enhance instructional materials as needed.
- Partner with faculty and administration to evaluate instructional technologies, implement improvements, and support effective use of tools—including AI applications, content authoring, and presentation platforms—to enhance learning.
- Remain current with learning theories, instructional technologies, and best practices, and integrate these into the design and delivery of instructional materials.
- Perform other related duties or special projects to support instructional quality and program objectives.
Desired Qualifications:
- Exceptional attention to detail with a consistent focus on accuracy and precision.
- Demonstrated proficiency in building, maintaining, and troubleshooting courses within Canvas LMS.
- Experience in designing, developing, implementing, and revising online and hybrid courses and instructional materials in higher education.
- Knowledge of instructional design principles and andragogical approaches across diverse audiences, environments, and modalities.
- Experience collaborating and providing consultation support to faculty and subject matter experts on instructional design, technology integration, and digital initiatives.
- Experience supporting student accessibility accommodations and applying accessibility standards in course design (SAILS or equivalent).
- Proficiency with instructional and creative technologies, including AI tools, content authoring platforms (e.g., Articulate Storyline, Rise, Captivate), and presentation/document creation software.
- Experience with visual design and media production for learning, including video editing and the creation of clean, professional layouts for digital content.
- Familiarity with Adobe Creative Cloud (e.g., Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, After Effects, Express, Stock) or similar multimedia tools is a plus.
- Experience supporting global learners and/or multilingual content delivery; proficiency in one or more foreign languages is a plus.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills in environments with multiple priorities and short deadlines.
- Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective, professional, and respectful working relationships with faculty, staff, and administration.
- Evidence of strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to convey ideas clearly and collaborate effectively across diverse stakeholders.
Working Environment:
- Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse (75%); required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work (10%)
- Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds (5%)
- Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts
- Ability to clearly communicate verbally, read, write, see and hear to perform essential functions.
