I. JOB OVERVIEW
Job Description Summary:
The Office of the University Controller is responsible for safeguarding the overall integrity of the university’s fiscal activities. In this capacity, the office provides leadership and service excellence in financial stewardship, reporting, and business operations in support of the University’s strategic mission and its long‑term objective of achieving distinction as a leading research institution at the national and international levels.

The Manager, Accounting reports to the Director of University Accounting Operations and is responsible for the managerial oversight, governance, and consistency of complex accounting functions. This role ensures the accuracy, completeness, and compliance of financial statements, balance sheets, account reconciliations, and regulatory filings in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), institutional policies, and applicable regulations.

In this role, the Manager, Accounting directs and oversees month‑end, quarter‑end, and year‑end close activities; reviews and approves quarterly balance sheet and statement of activities analyses; evaluates monthly expense variance reporting; and ensures the overall integrity and reliability of financial reporting produced by the accounting unit. The position exercises review and approval authority over complex accounting matters, including debt accounting, construction‑in‑process, and federal loan activity, Facilities and Administrative (F&A) Rates proposals and serves as the primary managerial reviewer for related financial reporting.

The Manager, Accounting is responsible for and management oversight of fixed asset, land, and building accounting processes, ensuring consistent application, compliance, and control across the full asset lifecycle. This includes establishing expectations, reviewing results, and ensuring alignment with university policies and regulatory standards, while delegating detailed transaction‑level activities, reconciliations, and system administration to Lead Accountants and accounting staff.

The position applies GAAP and established institutional accounting standards to assess the appropriateness, accuracy, and timeliness of accounting activity; evaluates the effectiveness of internal controls; and directs corrective actions as needed. The Manager, Accounting oversees transaction processing, verification, and posting to the general ledger to safeguard the integrity of the University’s financial records and mitigate risk. The role also evaluates accounting procedures and internal controls and recommends enhancements to the Director of University Accounting Operations to strengthen efficiency, compliance, and the control environment. Operating with a high degree of professional judgment, the Manager, Accounting collaborates with the Director of University Accounting Operations, campus partners and external auditors to support the University’s financial stewardship responsibilities. The position serves as a key managerial liaison, providing interpretation of accounting standards, resolving complex issues, and ensuring that accounting operations effectively support institutional objectives. This management position serves as a direct escalation point and provides formal supervision to the accountant staff directly. Responsible for the daily operations and work quality; makes hiring decisions, provides coaching, training and mentoring, manages performance and determines future staffing needs.

The Manager, Accounting supports the Office of the University Controller by ensuring the production of accurate, timely, and auditable financial records. This position requires in‑depth knowledge of accounting theory, principles, practices, systems, and terminology.

Performs other work related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 6 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 4 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • Certified Public Accountant
  • Bachelor’s in Accounting or Business-related degree
  • Exceptional proficiency in Microsoft Excel, with the ability to leverage advanced functionality to analyze, interpret, and present complex data.
  • Experience working with Oracle, FAS (Fixed Asset Software), and Lease Harbor
  • Working knowledge of Uniform Guidance audit requirements, Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) provisions applicable to fixed assets, and federal student loan accounting and compliance requirements, including Single Audit and FISAP reporting.
  • Basic knowledge of artificial intelligence–enabled productivity tools, such as Microsoft Copilot, and the ability to apply them under guidance to support routine accounting tasks and improve efficiency.
  • Demonstrated strong analytical and organizational capabilities, exceptional attention to detail and accuracy, advanced verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively while providing leadership within a team environment.
  • Ability to plan, create timelines to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, follow thru the timelines, and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with all levels of employees, management and external agencies.
