About the Role
Ascend Public Charter Schools seeks a Manager of Curriculum Design & Management for Humanities to support the design, production, and continuous refinement of elementary Humanities curriculum across the network. Reporting to the Associate Director of Curriculum Design & Management for Humanities, this leader is responsible for developing high-quality instructional materials that reflect Ascend’s vertically aligned K–12 academic model and long-term Regents and Advanced Placement readiness trajectory.

Ascend’s K–4 Humanities program builds foundational literacy, cumulative knowledge, and structured writing progression that serve as the bedrock for middle school analytical rigor and high school college-preparatory coursework. The Manager ensures curriculum materials are intellectually coherent, developmentally sequenced, implementation-ready, and aligned to network standards.

This role requires precision in curriculum writing, strong project management discipline, and a deep understanding of early literacy progression within a vertically integrated academic system.

Core Responsibilities

Curriculum Design & Production
  • Draft, revise, and refine K–4 Humanities units, lesson plans, and instructional materials aligned to Ascend’s school design.
  • Ensure curriculum reflects strong foundational literacy development, including decoding-to-comprehension progression, structured writing development, and knowledge-building coherence.
  • Develop scope and sequence documents that intentionally build toward middle school analytical expectations.
  • Curate and annotate high-quality literary and informational texts aligned to intellectual rigor and diverse representation.

Assessment & Writing Progression Alignment
  • Develop unit assessments, writing tasks, and common performance tasks aligned to network benchmarks.
  • Create clear rubrics, exemplars, and scoring guides aligned to cumulative writing progression.
  • Ensure pacing guides and assessment calendars reflect realistic instructional sequencing and implementation feasibility.
  • Maintain alignment between curriculum artifacts and internal assessment cycles.

Implementation Readiness & Quality Control
  • Ensure curriculum materials are rollout-ready, clearly formatted, and structured for classroom execution.
  • Maintain version control, documentation systems, and artifact libraries with disciplined attention to detail.
  • Conduct internal quality reviews to ensure clarity, coherence, and academic rigor prior to release.
  • Incorporate feedback from school leaders and T&D teams to strengthen implementation alignment.

Continuous Improvement & Data Integration
  • Analyze student performance data and classroom feedback to inform curriculum revisions.
  • Partner with Training & Development leaders to ensure curriculum adjustments reflect instructional execution realities.
  • Participate in structured revision cycles to improve pacing, clarity, and rigor.
  • Ensure curriculum evolves based on evidence while preserving vertical coherence.

Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Collaborate closely with Associate Directors and Senior Directors to ensure K–4 curriculum aligns to the broader K–12 Humanities trajectory.
  • Partner with T&D teams to ensure strong alignment between curriculum design and instructional practice.
  • Support network-wide curriculum launches and implementation milestones.

Qualifications

Required Experience
  • 3–6 years of experience in K–12 education, with demonstrated success in elementary literacy instruction.
  • Experience writing or refining curriculum materials aligned to standards.
  • Strong understanding of foundational literacy development and writing progression.
  • Exceptional written communication and organizational skills.

Preferred Experience
  • Experience in a high-performing charter network or centralized curriculum environment.
  • Experience contributing to vertically aligned K–12 curriculum systems.
  • Master’s degree in Education, Literacy, Curriculum & Instruction, or related field preferred.

Compensation

The salary for this position begins at $70,000. Salaries are determined using an equitable compensation scale that accounts for years of experience and levels of attained education.

Location & Work Arrangement

  • Based in our Brooklyn, NY office
  • Hybrid work schedule requiring in-office presence at least three days per week

In-person work expectations include network office time, stakeholder meetings, school visits, special events, and other role-specific responsibilities as determined by management.
