Position Overview
The KIPP NYC Managing Director, Technology (MD, Tech) is an essential role on the Technology team, responsible for the vision and strategy for all KIPP NYC technology systems, services, and infrastructure. The MD, Tech will lead the Technology team in exceptional execution and innovative sustainability solutions to support our schools and staff as they provide our students and families with best-in-class education. The MD, Tech will ensure that technology across KIPP NYC is secure, forward-thinking, and deeply aligned with our mission to provide joyful, academically excellent schools.
The MD, Tech will lead a robust team of 20 technology professionals, including a leadership team of Directors across Infrastructure, Client Services & Support, Applications & Data, and IT Business Operations. The MD, Tech will also serve as a key strategic partner to school leaders to enhance teaching and learning with cutting-edge and effective technology, as well as with our regional leadership to amplify operational excellence for the entire organization.
The ideal candidate for this role is a mission-driven, systems-oriented leader who excels at building resilient and dynamic teams, designing solid structures, and leading organizational change, with a belief that technology can empower students and educators in every classroom.
The Managing Director, Technology (MD, Tech) will report directly to the Chief Operations & Information Officer and will serve as a senior leader of the KIPP NYC Regional Support & Technology Team.
This is a full-time role that follows a hybrid work schedule, requiring a minimum of three days per week in person based out of our KIPP NYC Midtown Manhattan office. Regular school and regional-site visits are required based on operational needs.
General responsibilities & Duties include (but are not limited to):
Regional Leadership & Team Management
- Leads the KIPP NYC Technology team by building a mission-aligned culture rooted in collaboration, equity, and continuous improvement with transparent and authentic performance enablement, including clear goal-setting and regular feedback
- Develops and mentors a high-performing team of technology professionals to support KIPP NYC’s deep commitment to joyful, student-centered schools.
- With the Tech leadership team, oversees all daily technical operations, maintaining high-quality service delivery, operational efficiency, and clear workflows.
- Leads regional strategy for all network programming and shared services, advising senior leaders on technology performance, risks, opportunities, and strategic direction- including regional technology policies, internal controls, user guidelines, and security protocols.
- Cross-collaborates with regional Shared Services Teams (SST) to integrate innovative technological solutions into KIPP NYC Academics, School Operations, Talent, Data, and Finance to ensure schools have the resources, guidance, and support needed
Technology Strategy & Operations
- Manages and oversees strong data security, privacy protections, disaster recovery readiness, and business continuity across all systems.
- Leads the evaluation, selection, and implementation of all KIPP NYC technology, including core technology infrastructure - networks, telecom, servers, cloud environments.
- Assess and optimize hardware, software, and applications to enhance instructional, operational, and administrative reliability and scalability.
- Manages the technology budget, ensuring responsible spending, strategic investment, and long-term sustainability in alignment with approved budgets
- Oversees procurement, contracting, vendor relationships, and compliance for all technology services and systems; represents KIPP NYC with external stakeholders, community partners, vendors, and agencies as needed.
- In collaboration with school and regional leaders, gathers feedback to assess technology needs to drive improvements in systems and services, incorporating emerging technologies, cybersecurity advancements to drive strategic decision-making.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field. Master’s Degree a plus
- Minimum 10 years of progressive experience in technology leadership, with responsibility for enterprise-wide systems, infrastructure, operations in a complex, multi-site technology environment. Minimum 5 years of team management
- Relevant certifications such as ITIL, CISSP, PMP, cloud certifications, Google Educator, or ISTE. (preferred)
- Proven success in leading and developing high-performing, multi-functional teams, including coaching managers and senior leaders
- Strong background in enterprise infrastructure, cloud environments, networks, cybersecurity, and end-user computing
- Experience designing and executing technology strategy aligned to organizational goals and long-term sustainability to build scalable systems and lead organizational change
- Experience overseeing technology budgets, vendor relationships, procurement, and contract management
- Strategic and forward-thinking project management skills with a meticulous attention to detail with the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts for diverse, non-technical audiences
- Ability to exercise discretion and judgment with the handling of highly sensitive and confidential information
- Demonstrated passion for and a commitment to the KIPP NYC mission for high-quality public education and social justice for all

Compensation & Benefits:
KIPP NYC offers a competitive salary ranging from $165,000 to $195,000 per year. Salary ranges at KIPP NYC are standardized based on role level and role function. Individual salaries are determined through a lens of equity, accounting for years of experience relevant to the role and scope of responsibilities, and are benchmarked against others within the same salary band. Starting salaries typically fall in the lower half of the salary range, however they are ultimately determined by scope of the position, the candidate's relevant experience, and internal equity.
