Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Department of Mathematics and Physics within the College of Health and Sciences promotes North Carolina Central University’s commitment to excellence in instruction, research, and service offering programs of study leading to the Bachelor of Science degree and the Master of Science degree each in mathematics and in physics. In addition, the Department offers all General Education Curriculum courses in mathematics as well as in physics
Primary Purpose of Position
Under direction of Associate Dean for College of Health and Sciences (CHAS), the Professional Tutor/Academic Coach for the STEM Learning Center for Mathematics and Science Student Academic Support Services is responsible for providing tutoring and learning assistance, academic and student development coaching through the STEM Learning Center in the College of Health and Sciences (CHAS) that help guide students towards successful learning in mathematics and science outside of the classroom.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Commitment to diversity and inclusion in fulfillment of the university’s mission, knowledgeable of university and pre-professional curriculum requirement; knowledgeable of tutoring practices and principles; attained intermediate proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite.

Ability to read and interpret any pertinent course materials such as syllabi, course/homework instructions or any educational information that will assist in the student’s learning experience. Ability to write daily reports and email correspondence.

Ability to speak effectively with students or employees of organization. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form and be able to explain/interpret to students and the ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties
Function Instructional

Identify the tutoring needs of students and provide appropriate academic support:

  • Facilitate learning as a guide or coach to assist students to become successful and independent learners.
  • Use a variety of instructional techniques in tutoring sessions to meet the learning needs of students.
  • Integrate effective study and learning strategies to maximize the potential of students for academic progress.
  • Conduct monthly academic and mathematical workshops.
  • Promote the college’s tutoring program during outreach activities and events.
Identify or develop handouts, on-line resources, and hands-on materials to engage students in learning mathematical and scientific methods

Function Administrative
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
Establish and maintain rapport with STEM instructors to ensure student success:

  • Collect necessary course syllabus or subject materials to implement in tutoring sessions.
  • Consult with faculty on student progress and, when appropriate, suggestions for strategies on assisting students.
Establish and maintain rapport with STEM Learning Center staff to ensure student success:

  • Maintain accurate record of tutoring sessions.
  • Collaborate with referring faculty on student attendance and progress in tutoring sessions.

Function Administrative
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.

Maintain caseload of students tutored in mathematics every semester and provide monthly progress reports to Lead Professional Coach/Activity Coordinator of STEM Learning Center and Assistant Dean of CHAS:

  • Complete and submit Monthly Tutor Logs.
Perform other related activities as assigned per Lead Professional Coach/Activity Coordinator of STEM Learning Center.
