About the Academy at Penn
The Academy at Penn is a five-year, cohort-based college and career readiness initiative serving first-generation students in the School District of Philadelphia. In partnership with the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education and the School District of Philadelphia, the Academy provides a rich, student-centered experience that blends academic preparation, career-connected learning, and personal growth.

Students participate in programming during the school day, on Saturdays, and through summer experiences, including a four-week immersion on the University of Pennsylvania campus. The Academy is designed to expand what is possible for students and to create meaningful pathways to college, career, and long-term success.

The Role
The Part-Time Elective Teacher (Financial Algebra and Personal Finance) will teach a daily elective course for Academy at Penn students at Furness High School. These courses will help students build practical financial literacy and applied math skills through topics such as budgeting, banking, credit, taxes, investing, loans, entrepreneurship, and financial decision-making, using engaging, real-world and project-based learning experiences.

The teacher will work with 10th grade students during one semester and 11th grade students during the other, building students' skills in creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication. Class size is capped at 25 students to support a high-quality, interactive experience.

Key Responsibilities
  • Teach one daily elective course each semester in Financial Algebra or Personal Finance using an established Academy at Penn curriculum
  • Facilitate engaging, real-world learning experiences that help students apply financial literacy and math concepts to everyday life and future goals
  • Guide students through topics such as budgeting, banking, credit, taxes, investing, loans, and financial decision-making
  • Foster a classroom environment that encourages critical thinking, student voice, collaboration, and confidence with financial concepts
  • Assess student learning and assign grades in alignment with school and district expectations
  • Collaborate as needed with Academy at Penn staff to ensure alignment with broader program goals
  • Maintain a positive, structured, and inclusive classroom culture

Schedule and Compensation

  • Schedule: Monday–Friday, 12:50 PM – 2:50 PM (on-site at Furness High School)
  • Additional Time: 1 hour per day for planning and preparation
  • Total Hours: Approximately 15 hours per week
  • Compensation: $40 per hour

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Valid Pennsylvania teaching certification required
  • Experience teaching high school students preferred
  • Experience or interest in personal finance, business, or project-based learning
  • Ability to deliver engaging, student-centered lessons
  • Strong classroom management and relationship-building skills
  • Ability to connect content to real-world applications and student interests

Clearances and Requirements

  • All required Pennsylvania clearances (Criminal History, Child Abuse, FBI Fingerprinting)
  • Act 168 and Act 24 forms
  • Pennsylvania Mandated Reporter Training (Act 126)
  • TB test
  • Ability to work on-site at Furness High School during scheduled hours
