Job Description 
Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads – both students and employers – for 50 years. It has grown from 1 campus into a regional educational and economic force. TCC is the largest provider of higher education and workforce services in Hampton Roads, enrolling nearly 25,000 students in 2024-25. Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College (TCC) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions. The college had 3,399 graduates in 2024-2025, 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4-year institutions. Of South Hampton Roads residents enrolled in higher education 33% enrolled at TCC. TCC’s institutional accreditation is affirmed through 2027 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

The Open-Door Program is a federally funded Student Support Services/TRiO program that provides academic support to disadvantaged college students.

Provide individual tutoring in English, writing, math or science with support using information technology applications, and integrate study and learning strategies to promote independent learning.

Tutor students in the specified disciplines and encourage students to develop a systemic approach to studying that will serve them in many courses. Participate in professional development offerings. Meet with the ODP Coordinator-Portsmouth and instructors to plan appropriate academic support for students. Refer students to appropriate campus resources as needed. Keep and maintain regular and accurate records of tutoring sessions using the appropriate forms. Reach out to students in the program and encourage them to come in for academic support. Perform other duties consistent with the position of Peer Tutor.

Special Assignments  | May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA's/Required Qualifications  | Candidates must have completed at least 24 credits of higher education with at least a “B” or better average in content area or a related subject area with extensive knowledge of subject being tutored.
The tutor must have the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Ability to work with a diverse student population.
Ability to adjust tutoring methods as needed to meet various learning styles.
Ability to work well with staff, students, and faculty at the professional level.
Ability to integrate effective study and learning strategies to maximize the student’s potential for academic progress.

English/Writing tutors should be proficient in research methods, APA and MLA citations and standard undergraduate communications including but not limited to all major arguments, grammar, and public speaking.

Math tutors should be proficient in statistical and mathematical concepts from basic arithmetic to pre-calculus, including trigonometry.

Science tutors should be proficient in biological and chemical science including life sciences and anatomy.

Ability to work a flexible schedule that may include evening and weekend hours.
