The Pre-College Programs graduate assistantship offers unique insight into pre-college programming at the University of Maryland. The Pre-College Programs graduate assistant (GA) administers the Terp Young Scholars (TYS) program for academically talented high school students. The GA will assist in marketing, program administration, and the hiring, training and supervision of undergraduate program assistants. This position plays a critical role in the day-to-day operation of the Terp Young Scholars program.
As time allows, the GA may assist with advising incoming freshmen through the Freshmen Connection Program. The GA may also have the opportunity to teach UNIV100, an introductory freshmen course, for additional compensation. After working in this role, the Pre-College Programs GA will be a competitive candidate in any higher education/student affairs-based career, with expertise in administration at a flagship university. The GA is an integral part of a small team responsible for creating a transformative experience for prospective Terps.

Position Title: Program Assistant, EXST Pre-College Programs
Appointment Term and Compensation: Beginning June 1, 2026,and ending August 28, 2027. The appointment may be extended by mutual agreement of the GA and EXST. Compensation during the full time appointment will be calculated based on the Graduate Assistant I rate. At the discretion of the University, this assistantship may be renewed by written agreement. The GA's responsibilities will require an average weekly time commitment of 20 hours per week for a full-time appointment. The GA's work hours must occur Monday through Friday. The 20-hour-per-week work schedule will be negotiated at the beginning of each fall, spring, winter, and summer semester. The GA cannot enroll in a synchronous summer course that runs during Summer Session II-C (July 13 - July 31, 2026).
The Pre-College GA must undergo a background check that includes fingerprinting and the completion of a "Release of Information" form. The cost of this background check will be covered by Extended Studies. The Pre-College GA must also undergo CPR certification at Extended Studies' expense.
Supervisor and Contact Info: The GA will report to the Coordinator, Pre-College Programs, Extended Studies, 2205 Artemesia Building, 8400 Baltimore Avenue, College Park, Maryland 20742.
Responsibilities:
The GA's duties shall be of a Program Assistant, EXST Pre-College Programs, and his/her responsibilities include:
- Assists with coordinating and implementing program logistics through established timelines.
- Assists with marketing and outreach for the Terp Young Scholars program.
- Assists with Terp Young Scholars administration, including application review and responding to student/parent inquiries via email and phone.
- Assists in the assessment, evaluation, and benchmarking of offerings and services.
- Provides a professional staff on-the-ground presence during the Terp Young Scholars Program. This includes sustaining a safe and responsible environment for program participants by overseeing the Terp Young Scholars resource room and serving as the first contact for emergencies and situations that arise.
- Other duties as assigned
Additional Benefits:
- Tuition remission (as a Graduate Assistant, up to 10 credits in fall and spring, up to 8 credits in summer, and up to 4 credits in winter). Courses may be taken during Summer Session as long as any courses taken during Summer II-C are asynchronous. Requests to take a synchronous course during the Summer II-C semester will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

- Legal protection to the extent defined and authorized under Maryland Annotated Code, State Government Article, Sections 12-304 et al, 12-401 et al.
- Time-away from duties. A full time (20 hours per week), 12-month assistantship carries the expectation that the GA will be allowed ten workdays (40 hours) of collegially supported absence. This time away from duties must be taken during the current appointment. It may not be accumulated or transferred. It does not include time when UMD is closed. Because colleagues must perform the GA's responsibilities during an absence, reasonable notice and prior approval by the GA's supervisor are required. This collegially supported absence may not be used in Summer Session I or Summer Session II-C.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Must have accepted admissions or enrolled in a Graduate Program at the University of Maryland, College Park.
- Ability and a commitment to working with people and with diverse populations and communities.
- Ability to organize and execute multiple assignments simultaneously and under time constraints.
- Attention to detail and ability to learn quickly.
- Problem-solving mindset and ability to quickly respond to situations as they arise.
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters with discretion and tact.
- Ability to work independently and utilize good judgment in making decisions in accordance with university policy.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to positively represent the University of Maryland, deliver presentations, communicate with parents/students and provide effective team leadership.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Drive and online course delivery programs (such as CANVAS/ELMS)
Preferences:
- Supervisory experience.
- Demonstrated enthusiasm for working with pre-college students.
- Previous experience with UMD systems (including TerpEngage)
- Ability to create and maintain orderly databases and files.
- Ability to analyze and compile data and generate reports.
- Daily weekday availability preferred.
