Job Description | The Texas School Safety Center (TxSSC) is an official university-level research center at Texas State University. The TxSSC is tasked in Chapter 37 of the Texas Education Code and the Governor’s Homeland Security Strategic Plan with key school safety initiatives and mandates. The TxSSC serves as the clearinghouse for the dissemination of safety and security information through research, training, and technical assistance for K-12 schools and junior colleges throughout the state of Texas. As a result, Texas has become a national leader in school safety practices and is relied upon for assistance and guidance from jurisdictions throughout the nation.The Youth School Safety Program Specialist will work closely with the Youth School Safety Program Lead and the Youth Initiatives Coordinator to implement the Texas School Safety Center’s Youth School Safety Program to ensure school and community-based safety interventions are specifically aimed at engaging 6th-12th grade youth in all aspects and phases of school safety and preparedness. Duties include developing youth-friendly resources, training, and educational materials regarding school safety topics 1) youth substance use prevention, 2) teen mental health, 3) campus safety.This position will have the opportunity to research, develop, and deliver training curriculum and presentations (to be delivered in person, online, or through an online training module), technical assistance, and guidelines for best practices, and other resources focused specifically on engaging youth in school safety, mental health awareness, tobacco and other substance use prevention. The position will require the development of these resources to be tailored for youth, educators, administrators, additional school personnel, and parent and community-based organizations.
Responsibilities also include managing the Texas School Safety Teen Ambassadors and 1) develop and/or provide leadership and advocacy trainings, 2) host monthly meetings to provide guidance and technical assistance for service agreement completion and program objectives, 3) serve as a mentor to empower ambassadors to educate youth and adults about the importance of engaging young people in school safety.This position requires the ability to multi-task, shift priorities, and work independently to move tasks forward.
Job Duties | Research and content development for online and in-person trainings for both youth and adult audiences. Assist in the planning and implementation of trainings (virtual and/or in- person) including agendas, activities, resources, and training materials. Deliver various trainings and presentations online and in person for both youth and adult audiences. Online platforms include but are not limited to Zoom and Teams. Assist Program Lead in the marketing, communication, agenda development, recruitment plan, scheduling of presenters, and assessments of online and in-person trainings Oversee the statewide Texas School Safety Teen Ambassadors youth advisory board providing ongoing avenues for communication, leadership training, and technical assistance. Manage and maintain the Youth School Safety Program webpages. Work closely with the technology staff and web designers on layout, web content, and design for online trainings including online training modules. Assist in the development of youth-friendly school safety kits to address youth substance use, teen mental health, and campus safety. Oversee the assembly and distribution of school safety kits. (Oversight includes kit assembly, kit mail-out/distribution, organizing and preparing materials and supplies, lifting items, boxes and equipment up to 20 pounds, and standing for long periods of time). Assist in the management of the Youth School Safety Program social media platforms to include (but is not limited to) content creation and scheduling posts. Compile program reports. Reports are required monthly, quarterly, annually, and upon request by the Program Lead and Youth Initiatives Coordinator. Manage tasks and work assignments effectively and maintain control over all responsibilities to ensure deadlines are successfully met within required timelines. Maintain knowledge and expertise on engaging youth in school safety topics including mental health and substance use prevention as well as youth-adult partnerships. Assist Program Lead and Youth Initiatives Coordinator in performing other duties as assigned.
Additional Information to Applicants | Occasional overnight travel – 10% to 15% of the time Required to work hours other than 8:00–5:00 as necessary, including occasional weekends Applicants selected for an interview will be required to present a 10 to 15-minute presentation about a school safety topic/issue. The presentation should be intended for a youth audience.
