The salary range for this position is $21.47 - $28.00 per hour depending upon qualifications and is non-negotiable.
San Diego State University’s Center for Tobacco and the Environment (CTE), co-directed by Georg E. Matt, PhD, and Thomas Novotny, MD, PhD, is an extramurally funded center established in 2022. CTE’s mission is to prevent, reduce, and eliminate tobacco’s toxic legacy of environmental pollution and harm to human health caused by decades of commercial tobacco sales and use through the creation of an open, community-engaged, inter- and transdisciplinary research center that serves the diverse communities affected by the environmental impacts of commercial tobacco sales and use. CTE provides an organizational platform for the next generation of research that seeks solutions to human exposure and environmental contamination resulting from decades of tobacco use, and contributes to California’s comprehensive policy initiatives to end commercial tobacco sales and use by 2035.
CTE is home to a well-established group of multi-disciplinary scholars from different colleges at SDSU, including Health and Human Services, Sciences, Arts & Letters, and Professional Studies & Fine Arts, whose work focuses on the environmental impacts of commercial tobacco use. Researchers at CTE conduct multiple extramurally funded research projects focused on tobacco and the indoor and outdoor environment, including the newly funded Tobacco Policy Research Center (TPRC) for Tobacco and the Environment. Funded by the Tobacco-Related Disease Research Program, the TPRC has two main policy goals: (1) reduce tobacco product waste to protect local environments, and (2) protect indoor and outdoor environments from the toxic pollutants caused by commercial tobacco.
**Please note that due to the potential for the contamination of study samples, the incumbent must be a nonsmoker and non-user of tobacco, electronic cigarettes, and marijuana, and must reside with nonsmokers/ nonusers.**
Responsibilities:
Under the general direction of CTE’s Center Coordinator and Center investigators, the Project Manager will be responsible for the coordination of identified research projects carried out by Center investigators. The incumbent will be responsible for overseeing day-to-day research projects, including planning, implementation, and dissemination. The incumbent will participate in strategic planning and development, help lead partnerships with community stakeholders, support the project teams, help prepare reports for the funding agency, and disseminate research findings to the public and stakeholder groups. The incumbent will also supervise small groups of undergraduate/graduate research assistants, monitoring the achievement of project goals, objectives, and milestones to ensure project results. The incumbent will interact with internal and external project stakeholders to support project aims.
Working under the general supervision of the Center Coordinator and investigators, the Project Manager is responsible for, but not limited to:
Project Management & Communication 40%
- Coordinates the processes required to build the infrastructure of research projects and communication among investigators, staff, and community partners.
- Develops project plan(s), including training and resources needed, in consultation with investigators and the Center Coordinator.
- Proactively works with the investigator(s) to monitor project status to ensure progress towards completion and that all milestones are achieved.
- Modifies project plans and coordinates changes with participants and staff as necessary.
- Coordinates project meetings and workshops.
- Assists with the dissemination of results, including scientific publications, reports, press releases, newsletters, etc.
- Develops, updates, and maintains project website and social media.
Development and Delivery of Project Content 20%
- Assists with the development of training materials and projects, and supports the Center Coordinator and investigators with overall project management.
- Coordinates processes and helps oversee data collection, data entry, and data management.
- Develops workflow processes, protocols, and trainings that increase the efficiency of processes and data collection in the field.
- Assists with aspects of budget monitoring and reporting.
- Initiates project team meetings (as needed) to ensure the development of effective data collection/entry and management strategies.
Original Content Development 20%
- Assists with reports for funding agencies, IRB forms and submissions, manuscript preparation, and resource development for stakeholders.
- Assists with the development of surveys (online and hard copy) as well as complex training protocols (online and hard copy).
- Provide project website and social media management.
Supervisory Duties 10%
- Assists the Center Coordinator in supervising undergraduate research assistants, graduate research assistants, and staff.
- Assigns tasks, monitors workload, and meets individually with research assistants as needed.
- Works closely with the Center Coordinator and investigators to oversee aspects of data collection efforts, communication with participants, and data entry.

Qualifications:
Minimum Education & Experience
- Equivalent to graduation from a four year university
- Two years of experience in technical research or statistical work experience
Preferred Qualifications & Special Skills
- Experience coordinating multiple research, evaluation, or service projects.
- Experience using web-based and social media communication channels.
- Experience working with community stakeholders.
- Experience with research grant and contract administration.
- Experience providing work direction of student and staff positions.
