Job Description
Southwest Virginia Community College (SWCC) offers career-training programs in numerous technical, industrial and medical fields at a reasonable cost, going so far as to even waive tuition for certain eligible students. Located in Richlands, Virginia, Southwest offers associate’s degrees in such fields as business, education, general studies, liberal arts and science. These degrees are primarily intended for students who wish to transfer to a four-year university. Southwest also has associate’s degrees that feature programs intended to lead directly to a career in fields such as Nursing, Radiography and Administration of Justice.
This position serves as an Accessibility Services Assistant, supporting the Director of Disability Services and as a support staff member to the Admissions Office by:
Scheduling student testing appointments Administering approved test accommodations Providing support for proctored testing, read‑aloud services, and other approved testing modifications Coordinating communication with students and faculty regarding accommodations Serve as point of contact when the Director is unavailable Providing excellent customer service to students, faculty, staff, and community members Support prospective students with the application process Assist faculty and staff with questions about the admissions and enrollment processes
Key Responsibilities
Admissions & Records Support
Provide exceptional front‑line customer service to students, prospective students, community members, and staff. Assist with application and enrollment processes in person, by phone, and via electronic communication. Maintain confidentiality of all student information in compliance with FERPA. Assist faculty and staff with admissions- and enrollment‑related inquiries.
Accessibility Services Support
Collaborate with the Director of Disability Services to support students with approved accommodations. Schedule testing sessions and appointments for accommodated testing. Create and manage Accessibility Services Calendar Administer approved test accommodations, including: Proctored testing Read‑aloud services Extended time Low-distraction or private testing environments Maintain secure handling of testing materials before and after administration. Communicate with faculty regarding accommodations, testing needs, and scheduling. Track testing appointments and accommodations using Excel and internal systems.
General Administrative Duties
Maintain accurate records, files, and documentation. Prioritize workflow to meet deadlines while maintaining a high standard of service. Use Microsoft Office applications—including Excel skills—for reporting, scheduling, and communication. Operate standard office technology and software. Other duties as assigned, including support during special events or emergency situations.
Special Assignments | May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's/Required Qualifications
Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Excellent organization, attention to detail, and time‑management skills. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Demonstrated professionalism and strong customer service skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel, Word, and Outlook. Ability to handle confidential information with discretion. Must be willing to work evenings and/or weekends as needed.
Additional Considerations | Associate’s degree. Experience using the VCCS Student Information System (SIS). Experience working in an educational or accessibility services environment.
