Quantum Science Outreach Program Manager Full Description

Job Summary
We are looking for someone passionate about science outreach, particularly in quantum science, to join the Electrical and Computer Engineering department as the Quantum Science Outreach Program Manager under the National Science Foundation funded Hybrid Quantum Architectures and Networks (HQAN).
Reporting to the HQAN faculty lead in quantum education and outreach, this position will work with science outreach initiatives within the department and across UW–Madison, and coordinate outreach across HQAN. This position will develop new quantum science outreach activities, sessions for pre-college summer courses, and museum exhibits. This position will also run TeachQuantum, a summer professional development program that brings Wisconsin high school teachers to the UW–Madison campus to work on ways to implement quantum science education into their classrooms, and work with QuanTime, a national Q-12 Education partner, to put quantum science activities into classrooms. This position will work closely with HQAN senior personnel, attend relevant (virtual and in-person) meetings, and work with the Wisconsin Quantum Institute to coordinate HQAN center-wide activities hosted by UW–Madison.

Additional Information
This position can be full or part-time, between 50-100%.
This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location. The anticipated hybrid work schedule will begin after an initial training period which will require working 5 days on site.

Key Job Responsibilities
  • Coordinates with staff in ECE and other departments on planning and executing outreach initiatives related to quantum science
  • Develops and implements operating policies and procedures to promote the outreach program in alignment with the strategic plan
  • Monitors the unit or program budget and approves program expenditures
  • Reviews recommendations for and provides input on the design and development of new outreach programs or services
  • Determines outreach program needs and the personnel resource allocation plan
  • May exercise supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 FTE or equivalent employees
  • Supervises the implementation of outreach-program-focused strategic planning initiatives and objectives

Compensation
The starting salary for the position is $65,000, but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.

Required Qualifications
Science outreach experience, such as volunteering or professional work in K-12 education, science fairs, or museum exhibits.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability to translate physical science concepts into engaging, hands-on, and/or inquiry-based demos and lessons for K-12 students and the general public
  • Education and/or professional experience in the physical sciences, especially quantum science and technology

Education
Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM field required; STEM Degree in the physical sciences, electrical and computer engineering, or related field preferred.
