Research Data Engineer Full Description

Department Overview:
The Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine provides expert diagnosis and care of patients with lung diseases in our Pulmonary and Allergy Clinics, and of critically ill patients in our Intensive Care Units. In addition to our commitment to outstanding clinical care, we are also proud of our research programs from basic science research to clinical trials. Our educational mission includes teaching on many levels, including but not limited to our three fellowship programs in Allergy/Immunology, Critical Care Medicine, and Pulmonary Critical Care Medicine.

Function/Duties of Position:
This position is responsible for engineering efforts to collect, validate, manage, and convert raw data from a variety of clinical sources into organized and usable information for subsequent analysis by the Investigators and Lab team within the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine (PACCM). These databases will be built from the ground up for interoperability and machine learning tasks, and will include clinical (i.e., electronic health record and hand-curated), operational, and administrative data. Database output will contribute to refining data-driven clinical operations, care quality, and patient safety by optimizing data pipelines and integrating EHR and non-EHR data into streamlined reporting systems.

The initial focus is on solution design, development, testing, and implementation of ETL using a combination of the Epic Cogito systems (Clarity & Caboodle Data Warehouse) development environment, Microsoft SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), and T-SQL to populate Microsoft SQL Server database objects. This position will perform scoping and estimating of Data Warehouse activities, present technical information, and design proposals in verbal and written form using easily understood terms. The ideal candidate has a strong background in data engineering processes and technologies, a familiarity with the clinical and translational data use case, and an understanding of healthcare systems and clinical data standards.

This position will serve as the primary strategic account for collaboration between the ITG Business Intelligence & Advanced Analytics (BIAA) group and PACCM; the incumbent is expected to adhere to the training and compliance requirements set forth by the ITG BIAA group.
Required Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree in relevant field AND 3 years of relevant experience OR Bachelor's Degree in relevant field AND 5 years of relevant experience
  • Proficiency with relational databases and SQL
  • Expertise in at least one high-level programming language (i.e., R, Python, Julia, or Ruby; R preferred)
  • Epic clarity data model certifications and Epic Caboodle Developer certification within 6 months of hire
  • Demonstrated skill in designing and executing data analysis pipelines including data collection, processing, and developing summary reports
  • Demonstrated organization skills
  • Demonstrated effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Three to five years of related experience
  • Knowledge of and experience working within healthcare systems
  • Experience with electronic health record data (Epic preferred)
  • Experience with OMOP data model
  • Experience with both SQL and noSQL database designs
  • Epic clarity certification in a specific subject area (Inpatient, ambulatory, HB, PB, etc)
  • Epic caboodle developer certification
