The ETS Research Institute invites applications for an open-rank Research Scientist position in the Large-Scale Assessment (LSA) Foundational Research program. We seek quantitative scientists with expertise in one or more of the following areas: survey sampling, missing-data methodology, large-scale assessment, and complex latent-variable models (including mixed-effects models). The successful candidate will join a collaborative team advancing the science and practice of educational measurement in large-scale, survey-based assessment contexts.
Primary Responsibilities
- Conduct and publish research on foundational topics in large-scale assessment, including survey sampling, missing data, and latent variable modeling.
- Contribute to the development, evaluation, and implementation of statistical and psychometric methods for large-scale assessment programs.
- Collaborate with colleagues on projects related to operational assessments, methodological innovations, and research initiatives.
- Provide methodological consultation and support to internal and external stakeholders.
- Participate in proposal development for internal and external research funding.
- Mentor junior staff and contribute to the professional development of the research team.
- Disseminate research findings through peer-reviewed publications, technical reports, conference presentations, non-traditional venues (e.g., social media, research notes or blogs), and other appropriate channels.
- Engage with the broader research community through professional service, advisory roles, and collaborative projects.

Experience and Skills
- A Ph.D. or equivalent in statistics, psychometrics, survey statistics, educational measurement, mathematics, or a closely related quantitative field
- 3+ years of experience in an applied measurement or academic/statistical analysis environment is required.
- Demonstrated expertise in at least one of the following: survey sampling, missing data methods, large-scale assessment, or latent variable/mixed effects modeling. Candidates are not expected to have expertise in all areas.
- Experience with statistical programming (e.g., R, Python, SAS) and data analysis in large-scale assessment contexts.
- Strong record of research productivity, including publications and presentations.
- Ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams and communicate complex concepts to diverse audiences.
- Commitment to advancing equity, fairness, and innovation in educational measurement.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with operational assessment programs (e.g., NAEP, PISA, state or national testing).
- Familiarity with matrix sampling, imputation, and advanced modeling techniques for complex survey data.
- Knowledge of current trends and challenges in large-scale educational assessment.
This position requires initiative, creativity, research skills and technical expertise to contribute to new or modified research methodology and analytic or interpretative procedures in the area of large-scale educational surveys. The position may also require developing professional relationships as a representative, consultant or advisor to external advisory and policy boards and councils, research organizations, educational institutions and educators.

Education and Experience
REQUIREMENTS FOR A JUNIOR LEVEL POSITION
A Ph.D. or equivalent in statistics, psychometrics, survey statistics, educational measurement, mathematics, or a closely related quantitative field is required with one year of experience in the utilization of psychometric methods, statistical procedures and their applications. Experience may be gained through doctoral studies.
REQUIREMENTS FOR A MID-LEVEL POSITION
A Ph.D. or equivalent in statistics, psychometrics, survey statistics, educational measurement, mathematics, or a closely related quantitative field with at least three years of experience in an applied measurement or academic/statistical analysis environment is required. This position requires initiative, creativity, research skills and technical expertise to contribute to new or modified research methodology and analytic or interpretative procedures in the area of large-scale educational surveys. The position may also require developing professional relationships as a representative, consultant or advisor to external advisory and policy boards and councils, research organizations, educational institutions and educators.
REQUIREMENTS FOR A SENIOR-LEVEL POSITION
A Ph.D. or equivalent in statistics, psychometrics, survey statistics, educational measurement, mathematics, or a closely related quantitative field with at least six years of experience in an applied measurement or statistical analysis environment is required. This position requires initiative, creativity, advanced research skills and technical expertise to generate and contribute to new research methodology and analytic or interpretative procedures in the area of large-scale, educational surveys. Senior-level staff engage in novel foundational and applied research and methods and provide operational and strategic technical guidance on the use of current and emerging technology, innovations and research; develop professional relationships as a representative, consultant or advisor to external advisory and policy boards and councils, research organizations, educational institutions and educators.
