Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Department of Nursing emerges from the challenge to meet the manpower needs for qualified health care locally, nationally and globally. The role and scope of the Department of Nursing are reflected in the characteristics of selected learning environments and their ability to enhance individual productivity in a changing society. The Department of Nursing provides essential service to improve the quality of life for all people through quality educational programs, research and scholarly endeavors, and community service.
Primary Purpose of Position
The Senior Counselor/Advisor interviews, advises, and counsels students regarding admission procedures and academic requirements for the nursing degree program. Senior Counselor/Advisor also coordinates and refers support services and programs within the department and university. Senior Counselor/Advisor identifies the diverse needs of students who are striving to meet the program requirements; reviews and maintains individualized action plan to help each student achieve goals; implements appropriate retention strategies to support students’ efforts. This person will also mentor other advisors to assure that policies and procedures are consistent. The senior advisor will serve as facilitator of training sessions for academic advisors and success strategy sessions for nursing students.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Commitment to diversity and inclusion in fulfillment of the university mission; knowledgeable of university and pre-professional curriculum requirements; knowledgeable of advising practices and principles; excellent oral and written communication skills; strong interpersonal skills; excellent analytical skills that include analyzing data with standard statistical methods, interpreting the results, and providing written summary of data analyses, reasoned judgement, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively with others.
Minimum Education/Experience
Master’s degree and four years of experience in student services, counseling, or professional academic advising.

All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Licenses or Certification required by Statute or Regulation
The successful candidate should have excellent counseling skills; have the ability to work with diverse populations; knowledgeable of the general college requirements for admission; knowledge of various computer programs in order to develop a database for entering, retrieving and monitoring data that can be used for generating various departmental and university reports.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties
Function Administrative
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
Responsible for coordinating student success strategy workshops each semester. These strategies will aid students in determining educational barriers they may face and offer methods for overcoming these barriers.
Responsible for mentoring new academic advisors and facilitating orientation. The Senior Advisor will train and mentor new advisors on best practices to ensure our students receive the best support we have to offer.
Function Administrative
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
Responsible for functioning as a team/project lead for advising students on degree/program requirements and course scheduling. The Senior Advisor will speak with the student, takes notes on the interview and provide feedback to the admission committee on his or her impression of the student. In addition, the Senior Advisor will meet with students to give information about the various nursing programs we offer. During the interview the advisor will answer any questions the student will have about the nursing program.
Function Administrative
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
Responsible for implementing advising initiatives and protocols for targeted populations. Identify the diverse needs of students who are striving to meet the program requirements; review and maintain individualized action plans to help each student achieve goals; implement appropriate retention strategies to support students’ efforts. Continue to meet with the student to review his or her action plan to reassess the progress and determine whether another course of action will be needed.
Function Instructional
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
Leading and training advising staff; performing quality checks and reviewing work of advisors; developing training curriculum content for advisors.
Responsible for coordinating and facilitating training sessions for academic advisors to keep them abreast of changes within nursing as well as the university.
Function Administrative
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
Coordinating retention programs that focus on student academic success, managing and analyzing student academic information data and preparing reports; the information provided will aid the department in developing better strategies for retention and student success.

Responsible for supervising work assignments and delegating projects to advisors. The Senior Advisor will meet with advisors and develop various projects for student success. The tasks involved with the projects will be delegated by the Senior Advisor to the advisors.
