Your Purpose: 
The Senior Director, Business Development, will lead the strategic direction to drive NTC’s revenue generation efforts for fee-for-service contracts and regional philanthropy opportunities. This position is responsible for leading the Business Development team and closely collaborating with other departments to ensure targets are met through strategic efforts to renew and expand partnerships, drive new business, and sustainably grow regional philanthropy. 

What Will You Do:
Reporting to the Vice President, Program & Partnerships, the Senior Director, Business Development develops and oversees the implementation of revenue-generating strategies by working with internal teams and current and potential NTC partners. The role of a Senior Director, Business Development, includes functions related to Regional Revenue Generating Strategy, Internal and External Stakeholder Engagement, and People. Some of the key functions of the Senior Director, Business Development role are outlined below.

Regional Revenue Generating Strategy:  Lead the development and implementation of the regional revenue-generating strategy for the organization
  • Strategy Development: Lead the development of the fee-for-service and regional philanthropy strategy. 
  • Strategy Collaboration: Ensure the Business Development team is able to effectively work with internal stakeholders in the Program to strategize to meet revenue goals, including developing a strong point of view of what NTC services best align with partner and funder interests
  • Establish Metrics: Work closely with the Vice Presidents, Program and Partnerships, and Chief Program Officer to set achievable and ambitious annual and quarterly fee-for-service and regional philanthropy targets
  • Pipeline Analysis and Reporting: Analyze the current and historical revenue pipelines to monitor progress, make adjustments, and inform future strategy; responsible for reporting on progress to the organization, Leadership Team, and Board as needed
  • Lead Generation and Cultivation Strategy: Lead the Business Development team to ensure there is an intentional approach to generate and cultivate new business and funders 
  • Knowledge of NTC’s Work: Have a deep understanding of NTC’s core services and strategic priorities to inform how NTC can deepen and expand partnerships to meet partner and funder needs 
  • Content Development: Lead the team to create content for new funders and/or partners that represents the next generation of NTC’s work and that successfully tells the story of our work and captures project outcomes, deliverables, and budgets in a compelling way
  • Proposal Development: Manage the Director of Business Development to ensure that all proposals for existing and prospective partners are high-quality and aligned with NTC’s mission, vision, and programmatic strategy
  • Budgets and Grant Management: Collaborate with leaders in Program Delivery and Finance & Business Operations to create the approach that will inform fee-for-service and regional philanthropy budgets and grant spenddowns 

Internal and External Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with other leaders internally and externally to meet NTC’s revenue generation goals 
  • Leadership Engagement: Work closely with the Executive and Leadership teams, and the Board of Directors, to share transparent, timely data paired with strategic actions
  • Internal Cross-Team Collaboration: Work with leaders in Program, Marketing, Communications, Techpact, and Development teams to drive revenue strategy and strategically communicate about NTC’s work
  • External Stakeholder Investment: Engage in strategic conversations with current and potential partners and funders to build and maintain relationships, expand partnerships, and build investment in NTC offerings 
  • Content Development: Collaborate with other teams to enhance storytelling around NTC’s historical success and future direction, and highlight the organization’s impact and ensure NTC is competitively positioned within the education and political landscape
  • Contract Renewals: Provide the Program Delivery team that leads the renewal process with advisement and development to ensure they are securing renewals, including opportunities to expand business opportunities  
  • External Convenings and Conferences: Strategically plan for and attend external convenings and conferences to represent NTC and generate new relationships and business 
  • Partner Experience: Collaborate with the Program and Finance Business Operations Teams to ensure a positive partner experience, including topics such as contracting, grant agreements, invoicing, and operations as needed 

People: Senior Directors model leadership and positive culture-building for staff members with their management team and across the organization in alignment with NTC’s mission and Core Values. The Senior Director directly manages and develops staff and effectively facilitates collaboration across diverse groups of people, functions, levels, and contexts.  
  • Management Responsibilities: Manage a team of individuals in the Director, Business Development, and Manager, Business Development roles 
  • Team and Culture Development: Build a strong organizational culture, including embodying NTC's Core Values and holding others accountable for embodying the Core Values
  • Feedback: Identify development areas for direct reports and provide regular feedback and job-embedded support to direct reports and the team. Increase staff engagement through regular skip-level check-ins and team meetings, and ensure effective implementation of the staff performance enablement process for their team
  • Organizational Priorities: Create goals with program leadership aligned to organizational priorities, communicate priorities, and align work to priorities
  • Learning Orientation: Participate in internal learning opportunities. Provide development and collaboration opportunities through team meetings and other spaces. Responsible for retaining high performers and developing or exiting struggling staff as needed 
  • Organizational Learning: Lead the Business Development team to collaborate with internal stakeholders to identify, plan, and implement learnings related to the revenue-generating capacity and culture of the organization– including the skills, knowledge, and abilities of internal stakeholders to engage with institutional and individual funders and with district- and state-level partners 
 
What Will You Bring:
  • Bachelor's degree in communications, business, finance, or education preferred. A master’s degree is preferred  
  • 12+ years of related experience required, especially in complex, sometimes uncertain, environments, including experience writing professional grants and/or reports for large funders and/or partners
  • 5+ years of people management experience required (direct supervisory and management responsibilities, such as hiring, developing, and evaluating performance)
  • Experience working in PreK-12 education, such as in school districts, Charter Management Organizations, education-focused organizations, and/or foundations  
  • Evidence of previous success managing individuals and teams, including providing formal and informal feedback, developing others, and setting a positive culture and a sense of belonging 
  • Strong project management skills, analytical skills, and the ability to use data to drive strategy, serving as a strategic thought leader
  • Deep understanding of revenue strategies and ability to effectively engage a variety of stakeholders to maintain a top-notch reputation in the field 
  • The ability to motivate and influence others: excellent written, presentation, and verbal communication at the executive level
  • Evidence of previous success in balancing team management, driving strategy, engaging with clients and funders, travel, and organizational and team collaboration opportunities

What We Offer: 
This position offers a competitive starting salary range of $151,200 to $226,800  along with a comprehensive benefits package. New hires are typically brought into the organization at a salary closer to the start of the range. At NTC, when determining a salary offer for a role, we consider the specific requirements of the role, the relevant experience, and the required skills, while maintaining equity within our compensation bands. For this and other reasons, we have adopted a no-negotiation policy.
