Position Summary

SchoolKit seeks a strategic, systems-oriented Senior Director, Talent and Human Resources to lead the organization’s people strategy and operations. SchoolKit has recently undergone rapid growth from 20 to over 60 employees and we anticipate continued expansion in the years ahead. We seek a Senior Director who can build the robust talent and HR infrastructure required to support our current team and position the organization for future growth, ensuring we continue to hire and retain top talent as our work scales. The ideal candidate is a strategist, a change management leader, and a hands-on operator, capable of partnering across departments and scaling talent and HR practices that reflect our values. In the first twelve months, the Senior Director will focus on:
  • Building and staffing a high-functioning Talent and HR team
  • Assessing and improving SchoolKit’s policies, procedures, and practices to ensure compliance with all relevant laws and regulations
  • Selecting and implementing an HRIS to streamline and integrate core processes
  • Strengthening performance management tools and processes to support assessment, skill development, clarity, and meaningful feedback for employees
 
The Senior Director reports to the Chief Operating Officer and serves as a key thought partner to the Leadership Team, helping shape SchoolKit’s long-term talent and HR strategy and ensuring that people operations are efficient and equitable. The Senior Director oversees a team of Talent and HR professionals and will supervise an HR generalist, an on-staff recruiter, contracted staff, and vendors. 

Key Responsibilities
Talent and HR Strategy & Leadership

  • In partnership with the COO and President, co-develop and implement a multi-year talent and HR roadmap aligned to our organizational goals and core values. Identify trends in employee engagement, turnover, and morale that inform this talent and HR strategy. 
  • Lead complex, cross-functional change management initiatives. Analyze, build, and implement scalable systems, processes, and policies that are rooted in SchoolKit’s core values, industry best practices, and support our fully-remote, multi-state workforce. 
  • Serve as a strategic partner to the Leadership Team on people-related decision-making, providing reports and insights into trends, risks, and best practices and aligning talent and HR strategies with business needs and project priorities.
  • Lead continuous improvement of talent and HR functions by leveraging qualitative and quantitative data to refine strategy, optimize operations, and meet goals.
  • Lead the Talent and Human Resources team, including promoting team coordination and communication and providing ongoing feedback and professional development aligned to the team’s goals.

HR Operations & Compliance
  • Oversee core HR operations, including benefits, onboarding, offboarding, leave administration, and people records management, including classification compliance and contractor engagement.
  • Oversee HR compliance across multiple states, ensuring our policies and practices adhere to federal, state, and local labor laws. 
  • Lead the effective evaluation, selection, implementation, and management of HR technology platforms (e.g., HRIS, ATS) and vendors (e.g., benefits brokers, background check providers, employment counsel, etc.) that streamline operations and enhance the quality of the employee experience.
  • Lead annual compensation and promotion processes, ensuring fair and equitable practices at all levels of the organization, including internal and external benchmarking, salary band adjustments, and increases and bonuses. 
  • Oversee SchoolKit’s annual benefits process, including employee plan selection and enrollment as well as periodic audits of our benefits offerings for affordability and competitiveness.

Talent Management
  • Oversee recruitment, selection, onboarding, and retention functions, including management of recruiter(s), to build a diverse team.
  • Develop and manage performance management systems that support growth and accountability while enabling managers to provide full-time employees and contractors with meaningful, actionable feedback and guidance in formal and informal settings.
  • Partner with Finance, Operations, and programmatic teams to align workforce planning with business needs and current capacity to assign projects and grow our team strategically.
  • Design and implement career pathways for staff that clearly outline growth opportunities, define role expectations, and facilitate equitable internal mobility in alignment with the organization's structure and goals.
  • In collaboration with the Leadership Team, foster a culture of belonging and continuous learning, supported by practices and systems that strengthen connections in a fully remote organization.
  • Provide and oversee empathetic support to employees and coach managers to resolve performance, policy, and employment issues.

Experience and Qualifications
  • 12+ years of progressive HR and Talent experience, with at least three years in a senior leadership role, ideally in an education-related organization such as a school, a school district, or a nonprofit.
  • Strategic mindset with proven ability to lead complex organizational change and drive adoption of new systems, processes, and ways of working in a remote, scaling environment.
  • Strong analytical skills with demonstrated ability to design, interpret, and communicate HR metrics (hiring, engagement, retention, etc.) to drive strategic decisions.
  • Excellent project management and cross-functional collaboration skills with the ability to align HR and Talent initiatives with organizational goals.
  • Strong experience across both strategic HR leadership and hands-on operations. Proven ability to lead performance management, compensation design, and learning and development efforts.
  • Deep knowledge of best practices for human resources and talent management, including multi-state employment law and HR compliance for organizations with over 50 employees.
  • Experience selecting, implementing, and managing talent and HR technology and tools, especially HRIS and ATS platforms.
  • Demonstrated success managing and developing high-performing talent and HR teams.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and track record of incorporating diversity, equity, and inclusion into talent and HR frameworks, systems, processes, and tools.
  • Experience working with both full-time staff and independent contractors. Experience working with a remote team. 
  • Excellent interpersonal, coaching, and communication skills, with a service-oriented mindset.
  • SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, or similar HR certification, strongly preferred. 
  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master's or other graduate degree preferred.

Compensation
The starting salary for this position will be between $140,000 - $155,000, with the potential to earn an annual bonus dependent on company performance. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
