About the Opportunity

The Senior Network Engineer position onsite at Washtenaw Community College is highly technical in nature. The position requires an understanding of both server operating systems and network configurations with an emphasis on network administration. Duties will include; design, installation, upgrades, security, troubleshooting, planning and recommendations.

Where you will make an impact

  • Design, implement, and maintain VMware-based network solutions, ensuring optimal performance and scalability.
  • Design and deploy virtualization concept of workload balancing via vMotion, micro segmentation, balancing of affinity rules, and full use of DRS (Distributed Resource System) management.
  • Develop and deploy Software-Defined Networking (SDN) solutions, with a focus on NSX using VMware Cloud Foundation.
  • Implement Zero Trust security principles across the network infrastructure, ensuring data integrity and confidentiality.
  • Manage Layer 2 to Layer 3 conversion projects, ensuring seamless transition and minimal disruption to campus operations.
  • Deploy enterprise Networking IP structure designs and vLAN enterprise design for network segmentation and integration with SDN best practices. 
  • Create comprehensive physical and logical network documentation using Visio, maintaining accuracy and clarity for reference and troubleshooting purposes.
  • Plan and execute network infrastructure upgrades, providing detailed command-by-command instructions and expected outcomes for each stage of the process, following scheduled maintenance windows to avoid any unplanned service disruptions.
  • Conduct thorough testing of network upgrades and changes, collaborating with system Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to validate functionality and performance.
  • Develop robust rollback plans and procedures to mitigate risks associated with network changes and to avoid any unplanned service disruptions.
  • Configure and deploy enterprise monitoring solutions to help successfully install new systems and mature them into robustness and resilience with a minimum of service disruptions.
  • Utilize monitoring tools to capture and analyze traffic, track uptime, produce usage reports, and identify trends.
  • Develop and manage proper monitor alerting, mitigation, escalation, and on-call personnel rotation for 24/7 infrastructure systems coverage with a goal of 100% uptime.
  • Effective customer service skills to engage customer, resolve issues with a sense of urgency, and communicate in a timely manner.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment of network solutions with business objectives and requirements.
  • Stay informed about industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices.

What you will bring
 

  • Experience in providing support for all aspects of the campus network including switches, routers, DHCP, DNS, network access control, firewalls, Wi-Fi equipment and all other appropriate network equipment
  • 7+ years of experience in network engineering roles, with a focus on VMware, SDN, and NSX, Cisco and Palo Alto.
  • In-depth knowledge of Zero Trust security principles and best practices.
  • Proven experience in Layer 2 to Layer 3 conversion projects, with a track record of successful implementations.
  • Proficiency in network documentation using Visio or similar tools.
  • Strong command-line interface (CLI) skills and experience with network device configuration.
  • Experience using enterprise ticketing systems to document and track all request and issues through their entire change life cycle.
  • Solid understanding of network protocols, including TCP/IP, VLANs, and routing protocols (e.g., OSPF, EIGRP).
  • Experience with network testing methodologies and tools.
  • Experience with enterprise monitoring systems.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with strong attention to detail.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Must have the ability to work effectively with end-users, gain their confidence, understand their technical and operational needs, and translate them into viable technical solutions.
  • Experience creating and maintaining process documentation relevant to the role and department to improve organizational maturity.
  • Experience in new product investigation involving vendor interactions, RFP, Quotes, and stakeholder communication.
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., CCNP, VMware Certified Professional) are a plus.
  • A team player, able to work with peers on tasks and projects.
  • Demonstrated expertise in change management processes, including stakeholder communication, risk assessment, and impact analysis.
  • Proven ability to develop and implement effective change enablement strategies to minimize disruptions and ensure smooth implementation of network changes.
  • Experience in documenting and tracking changes, ensuring compliance with organizational policies and procedures.
  • Familiarity with change management frameworks such as ITIL or similar methodologies is highly desirable.
