Senior Staff Accountant 
Reporting to the Director, Financial Planning & Analysis, this role is responsible for ensuring accurate, timely, and transparent financial reporting, managing month-end and year-end close processes, and providing financial insights that support strategic decision-making across the organization.

The Senior Staff Accountant will take ownership of sales, cost of sales, and related journal entries and reconciliations, manage reconciliations across categories such as accounts receivable, inventory, capital investments, and deferred revenue. This position also serves as the primary liaison to manufacturing, ensuring smooth communication and accurate tracking of production-related financial data. In addition, this position will be the primary liaison with Product Development to ensure the accuracy and completeness of product financial proposals.  

Other responsibilities include providing support during internal and external audits, ensuring effective internal controls, applying accounting policies and procedures, guiding junior staff, and assisting with accounting system implementations.  

The Senior Staff Accountant will have a collaborative mindset, attention to detail, and the ability to manage complex accounting tasks while contributing to the financial health and integrity of the organization.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare, review, and analyze monthly financial statements to ensure accuracy and compliance with GAAP and company policies.
  • Take full ownership of sales, cost of sales, and related journal entries and reconciliations.
  • Working closely with a third-party provider as well as Customer Service, oversee and manage the company’s book inventory ensuring its currency and accuracy.  
  • Manage and reconcile asset categories, including accounts receivable, inventory, capital investments, and deferred income.
  • Prepare and oversee product-level P&Ls and track actual results vs. budget.
  • Serve as the primary liaison to manufacturing, ensuring accurate tracking of production-related financial data.
  • Support the future integration of royalty accounting into the finance team’s reporting structure.
  • Assist with internal and external audits by preparing schedules, documentation, and responding to auditor inquiries.
  • Maintain and strengthen internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure compliance with financial and industry-specific regulations.
  • Support the implementation of accounting policies and procedures to enhance operational efficiency and accuracy.
  • Mentor and guide junior accounting staff to foster professional development and high-quality work output.
  • Lead or support accounting system implementations, including requirements gathering, testing, training, and adoption.

Skills & Competencies
Technical Skills
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUP, INDEX/MATCH, macros, and data visualization).
  • In-depth knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting requirements relevant to the publications and media industry.
  • Hands-on experience with ERP systems (Oracle, SAP, NetSuite) including reporting, reconciliations, and process optimization.
  • Familiarity with financial planning tools such as Acumen for budgeting and forecasting.
  • Ability to support or lead the implementation of new accounting systems.
  • Proficient in preparing and reviewing journal entries, reconciliations, and consolidations.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • At least 8 to 10 years of advanced experience in accounting are necessary; having worked in publications or media is a plus.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting standards.
  • Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Excel, including advanced functions and data analysis tools.
  • Experience with ERP systems (Acumen, Oracle, SAP, NetSuite) 
  • Demonstrated experience with month-end close processes, account reconciliations, and financial statement preparation.
  • Ability to manage complex accounting responsibilities, including sales, cost of sales, asset reconciliations, and product-level P&Ls.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with experience collaborating across teams.
  • Experience supporting or leading new accounting system implementations is highly desirable.

Management of Others: This position does currently include direct supervisory responsibilities.

Location: Hybrid (2-3 days onsite in Princeton office, remainder remote)
