Specialist, Disability Support Full Description

Position Summary

To assist in creating equal access to programs and services in compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, as amended; to engage in the interactive process with disabled students; to evaluate and determine accommodations necessary to provide equal access to college programs and services; to communicate with faculty and staff to promote accessibility and universal design; and to provide opportunities for awareness and understanding of the impact of barriers in the college environment.

Primary Duties Performed

Engage with disabled students regarding potential barriers of the college setting; instruct students about college policy and procedures related to the use of accommodations; guide and educate students on self-advocacy skills; assist students in resolving academic difficulties; act as a liaison between students and faculty regarding the provision of accommodations; serve as a resource for students; continually assess needs; and promote retention and success of disabled students.
Review documentation of disability to determine service eligibility and identify appropriate accommodations necessary to make college programs accessible; work with students on an individual basis to help promote independence and full participation in academic and other programs.
Record and maintain confidential information (i.e., case notes, Banner, BDM, Medical/diagnostic documentation and reviews, etc.); participate in college efforts to collect data related to success and learning outcomes of students with disabilities.
Assist students with disabilities as they navigate STLCC enrollment processes; collaborate with Student Success Advisors in the creation of student schedules and selection of courses to minimize disability-related barriers; maintain strong working relationships with colleagues across the college to develop and implement programs in support of student academic progression to career placement/graduate degree.
Work closely with the Coordinators of Assistive Technology and Deaf Services to ensure seamless service provision to identified students.
Identify and collaborate with public and private entities that provide services, assistance, or information to disabled students, including other postsecondary institutions, social service agencies, secondary schools, etc.
Enhance support and accessibility for students with disabilities by promoting community awareness, fostering an inclusive environment, and improving retention efforts for students with disabilities.
Maintain a strong working knowledge of changing practices and legislation in the field of higher education and disability services by engaging in opportunities offered through leading national, state, and local organizations that promote current knowledge and best practices.
Use legal guidance, recommendations and best practices in higher education and disability to recommend, revise and implement college policy and procedures related to disabilities and equal access.

Qualifications/Experience

Bachelor’s Degree
Three (3)+ years of relevant full-time experiences.
Master’s Degree preferred.
