Sr Translation Specialist
Remote (this job may be performed from any state in the U.S.)
The Senior Translation Specialist contributes to the on-schedule delivery of translation and multilingual services for print and/or digital projects, working independently on larger, moderately complex assignments in a role that requires utilization of such core competencies as Leadership and Problem Solving. The person in this role oversees the review of K-12 learning materials so that the translated product is grammatically correct, clear, consistent, accurate, pedagogically aligned, and complete, while also adhering to required styles, publishing, and production standards and specifications, following best practices, and taking necessary actions to ensure product quality. This role helps guides assigned projects to completion on time and on budget, determines appropriate resource needs, manages external and internal resources while providing training as necessary, monitors status and schedule, and troubleshoots problems toward resolution. The person in this role also works extensively and collaboratively with other HMH cross-functional groups to satisfy internal and external customer requirements and implement best practices to ensure product quality.
Responsibilites
Translation Quality Review
• Understands, advocates for, and applies best practices for translation quality reviews to ensure that all project deliverables meet or exceed established standards and specifications for translated products in Spanish and other languages. This includes ensuring consistency, style, accuracy, and high publishing and production quality in print and digital products.
• Understands the application of Agile methodology in the development of educational learning solutions and works successfully on scrum teams and in sprint workflows. Is expected to demonstrate an accomplished level of Agile fluency/experience by the end of first year.
• Contributes to creation and communication of translation quality review plans and procedures based on alignment with agile methodology while getting necessary buy-in from key stakeholders and monitoring and acting on quality KPI information when relevant.
Project and Vendor Management
• Efficiently and effectively plans and delivers assigned projects while meeting expected translation quality review standards within required time frames and budgets. May mentor and guide other Translation Specialists to build their proficiency in this area.
• Sets project delivery expectations and established schedule and processes, monitoring and communicating status, troubleshooting problems, assessing and managing risk, and utilizing critical-thinking skills when deciding on appropriate actions to take.
• Contributes to internal resource planning and oversees the management and training of vendors, contingent workers, vendor partners, and TMS internal staff for assigned projects, ensuring program/product releases meet quality assurance milestones.
• Coordinates the selection of vendors, finalizing the scope of work to establish terms, delivery schedules, and quality standards. Monitors vendor performance, maintains positive relationships, and ensures compliance with company policies and industry regulations.
• Coordinates and conducts meetings with vendors and internal/external SMEs to discuss progress, provide feedback, and report status to the CDL.
Collaboration and Customer Focus
• Builds mutually beneficial, long-term personal relationships with peers, colleagues, management, various HMH stakeholder groups, and external customers through effective use of written and oral communication, including preparing and moderating PPT presentations and hosting internal/external conference calls.
•Creates customer-focused practices toward increased accessibility of our content, proactively anticipates customer issues, and responds to customers' requests promptly, accurately, effectively, and efficiently.
Project- Related Tasks
• Conducts screening evaluations of projects and oversees the creation and maintenance of translation assets. In charge of updating and approving Spanish and multilingual glossaries, style guides specific to the product line, and project specific materials for internal and external teams.
• Creates, maintains, accesses, and/or grants access to files and folders in file management applications to in-house employees, vendors, and contingent partners.

• Stays up to date with industry standards, processes, and technologies.
• Performs all tasks required to support department and company goals.
• Understands and applies digital workflows and how to optimize translation processes within those workflows.
• Adapts to varying workloads and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Key Stakeholders/Collaborators
• Internal: Works with Learning Experience Design, Product Experience Design, Delivery Development and Planning, Strategic Sourcing, Services, Office of Equity & Inclusion, Marketing, Finance, Legal, Global Supply Chain, Digital Production, and other HMH groups to develop product.
• External: Provides oversight for contractors and vendor Partners working on project assignments involving content translation services. Follows up and answers all vendor questions and concerns.
What You’ll Need
- BS or BA in education or related field
- Bilingual (English/Spanish)
- 5 years of related industry or functional experience with at least 4 years of translation, copyediting, proofreading, and/or other content quality assurance experience. And at least 2 years of project management experience, print and/or digital production or publishing experience with preference for educational publishing environment.
Technical Skills
• Must be highly skilled copyeditor with an extensive knowledge of editorial and Spanish-language conventions with excellent attention to detail, organization, and accuracy to drive on-time, high-quality results.
• Must have a strong grasp of the HMH Managing Complexity competency: looking at complex issues from multiple angles and gaining a sound understanding of the topic; recognizing the main consequences and implications of different options; exploring issues and uncovering the underlying issues and root causes; and determining the new information needed to solve problems and incorporating these concepts into the analysis.
• Must have strong oral and written communication skills. Verbal and written communication must be professional, comprehensive, clear, direct, and accurate.
•Must have strong project management skills exhibited by leading multiple projects simultaneously and prioritizing in a time-sensitive, fast-paced environment. Must demonstrate exceptional attention to detail, organization, accuracy, and outstanding follow-up skills. Must drive on time, high-quality results.
• Must have an understanding of the principles of Agile methodology and how to efficiently plan and execute tasks within sprint workflow.
•Must be able to identify, understand, and articulate issues as well as apply critical thinking toward reaching decisions. Must use effective approaches for choosing a course of action or developing appropriate solutions. Must be able to think holistically and identify potential risks.
•Must have extensive knowledge of print and/or digital production and publishing processes.
Physical Requirements:
- Might be in a stationary position for a considerable time (sitting and/or standing).
- Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.

Salary: $64,000 - $70,000
