Vice President of Talent Development Full Description

Great schools depend on great talent and leadership. The Vice President of Talent Development will provide executive leadership and strategic vision for the development, retention, and advancement of instructional and leadership talent across Democracy Prep Public Schools. Reporting to the Chief Schools Officer and serving as a key member of the Democracy Prep Executive Team, they will be responsible for ensuring that every leader and staff member in Democracy Prep school’s receives the support, development, and feedback they need to grow. You lead a high-performing team and collaborate deeply with CMO and school leaders to create inclusive, equitable, and outcomes-driven talent systems that drive student achievement and staff sustainability.

What You’ll Do
Teacher and Leadership Development
  • Oversee the design and implementation of comprehensive, data-informed teacher and leader development strategies that drive retention, growth, and instructional excellence across career stages. This includes, but is not limited to:
    • Conducting school walkthroughs and classroom observations to look for trends across different teaching groups (departmental groups, groups based on experience level, grade band groups, etc.) 
    • Assessing needs for development across these teaching groups and planning and executing practice clinics for Friday PD times. 
    • Monitoring progress following practice clinics and develop innovative strategies and coaching mechanisms to continuously address and improve upon teaching gaps. 
    • Providing live classroom coaching.
  • Lead the design and evolution of leadership development systems—including programming for Assistant Principals and the planned relaunch of Democracy Prep’s internal leadership incubator cohort.
  • Work directly with the school based leadership teams and alongside principal supervisors to ensure the development of  leadership teams (Assistant Principals, Deans of Culture), and mid-level leaders (Department Chairs, Grade Level Leads).
  • Partner with Chief Schools Officer and Principal managers to address school leader performance challenges, providing direct coaching and performance focused tools to School Leaders or to school leader managers as needed. Assist principal supervisors in providing supplemental coaching opportunities for struggling leaders and/or leaders who need targeted assistance with a core element of their leadership (i.e. training of mid-level leaders).
  • Design and lead strategies to better develop and retain mid-level and master teachers and equip school leaders to utilize these strategies. 
  • Lead the design and execution of teacher pipeline programs (for example, a teacher residency program or other internal growth program) to ensure that Democracy Prep has a cohort of teachers in training to fill vacancies each year.

Performance Management and Evaluation
  • Oversee the strategic design, norming, and continuous improvement of instructional and non-instructional performance evaluation systems to ensure they are rigorous, equitable, and aligned to organizational values.
  • Drive cross-campus alignment in evaluation execution and ensure managers are supported in delivering developmental coaching and feedback.
  • In partnership with the Schools and People teams, lead the revision and alignment of non-teaching evaluations to promote coherence and clarity across all roles.

Leadership Succession and Placement
  • Partner with the Talent Acquisition Team to ensure rigorous, equitable, and competency-aligned leadership hiring processes, including oversight of the Leadership Immersion process.
  • Maintain strategic oversight of the leadership heat map in collaboration with the People Team, using it to inform proactive placement, succession planning, and talent cultivation efforts.
  • Deliver evidence-based placement recommendations to the Chiefs Team, Schools Team, and People Team, balancing performance data, leadership readiness, and campus needs.

School Review Process
  • Provide strategic leadership in the execution and follow-up of the school review process, ensuring a strong cycle of support and accountability in collaboration with the Democracy Prep Schools, Academics, and People Teams.

Network Leadership and Executive Team Participation
  • Alongside the Chief Schools Officer, set the vision and long-term strategy for teacher and leadership development at Democracy Prep, ensuring alignment with network goals and priorities.
  • Lead the Talent Development team of two Senior Directors, and drive strong team execution, innovation, and cross-functional collaboration with the Academics, Schools, and People teams.
  • Serve as a senior thought partner to the Chief Schools Officer, wider Chiefs Team, and other executive team members, contributing to network-wide decision-making and strategic planning.
  • Continuously drive improvements and innovation as it relates to talent development.
  • Attend in-person Executive and leadership meetings as assigned 
  • Perform other related duties as assigned, including participation in network-wide or department specific initiatives and/or projects. 

Compensation
Salary range is $150,000-$175,000 commensurate with your experience. Democracy Prep employees are provided with a benefits package that includes medical, vision, and dental insurance, 403B matching, and parental leave.
