Job Summary/Basic Function: The academic advisor and learning specialist advises student-athletes for assigned sports on matters related to NCAA academic eligibility and ensures that student-athletes who are academically and/or behaviorally at-risk, or who have education-impacting disabilities, receive the academic support necessary for them to succeed in the classroom. This position serves as a liaison to other campus departments to assist with any academic or other student-wellness issues incident to student-athletes’ participation in their sports, and the position supervises all Athletics Department peer-based academic services, hiring, training, scheduling, and supervising all department tutors and study-tables monitors.
Minimum Qualifications | Master’s degree.Experience in NCAA academic advising (graduate assistantships are acceptable experience).
Preferred Qualifications | At least one year’s experience with academics in an NCAA Division I athletics environment.Familiarity with Wright State University academic policies and programs.
Essential Functions and percent of time: | 20% – Meet with at-risk student-athletes to assess academic progress, to discuss academic challenges, and to provide instruction regarding best practices to mitigate those challenges. Arrange academic support appropriate to the student-athletes’ needs, including campus services (e.g. Academic Success Centers and Office of Disability Services, etc.) and department resources (e.g. study tables, tutoring, etc.). Partner with coaching staffs and with other academic staff to ensure scheduled academic support creates no conflicts with class attendance or with sport participation. Conduct follow-up meetings with student-athletes as needed.
20% – Provide proactive advising to student-athletes for assigned sports on matters related to NCAA progress toward degree requirements, major selection, course selection, minimum credit hour requirements, course completion requirements, GPA, and other matters affecting NCAA continuing eligibility.
20% – Utilize a variety of technical systems to monitor the academic progress of at-risk student athletes and student-athletes for assigned sports. Provide timely notice to coaching and administrative staffs regarding academic progress of student-athletes, attendance at study tables, advising appointments, tutoring appointments and of issues that could affect NCAA eligibility. Collaborate with academic staff and coaching staffs to make adjustments to student-athletes study tables schedules, levels of academic support, and academic support schedules as needed.
10% – Stay up to date on NCAA initial eligibility and continuing eligibility requirements. Provide advice and assessments to coaching staffs regarding the NCAA academic eligibility of direct-from-high school and transfer prospective student-athletes. Serve as a liaison to the NCAA Eligibility Center on matters related to the initial eligibility of domestic and international prospective student-athletes.
10% – Hire, train, supervise, and schedule department tutors and study-tables monitors. Ensure all tutoring is conducted in compliance with Wright State University Academic Integrity Policy and NCAA rules and regulations. Ensure study-tables monitors provide student-athletes a quiet, monitored study-tables environment, free from distractions and from behaviors inconsistent with quiet study. Provide weekly study tables attendance reports to advising staff and coaching staffs.
10% – Serve as a liaison to other campus departments to assist with any academic or other student-wellness issues related to education-impacting disabilities or incident to student-athletes’ participation in their sports. Provide documentation to student-athletes of times and dates where participation in team travel and competition could affect class attendance.
10% – Document and report initial and continuing eligibility status of student-athletes for assigned sports. Ensure the accurate and timely completion of Academic Progress Rate, student outcome, and other reports to the NCAA, as well as required academic reports to various campus entities.
