POSITION SPECIFICS​

Join the Schreyer Honors College as an Admissions Counselor to serve as a strategic representative of the College and Penn State by leading recruitment efforts, supporting selection processes, coordinating events, and guiding new student transitions.

This is an exciting high-touch role that provides opportunities to meet high achieving students and help guide their college selection process. 

The Admissions Counselor will utilize interpersonal and counseling, critical thinking, and event planning skills to assist prospective scholars and their families with their discovery of and selection of the Schreyer Honors College. 

Travel will be a major part of this position and the expectation is up to 12 weeks throughout the year. Travel will typically be for one to four days in a travel week.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Recruitment & Outreach

    • Deliver public presentations to promote the Schreyer Honors College's mission and programs.

    • Conduct recruitment activities virtually and in person.

    • Represent Penn State and the Schreyer Honors College at national recruitment events including college fairs, high school visits, and receptions.

    • Provide strategic analysis and recommendations for admissions and recruitment initiatives.

    • Collaborate with Public Relations and Alumni teams on communications.

    • Contribute to annual reporting and budget planning for admissions.
       

  • Application Review & Admissions Support

    • Assist with the annual application process for incoming first-year scholars.

    • Make independent and joint selection decisions.

    • Support faculty and staff in reviewing applications and evaluating credentials.

    • Interpret admissions policies to help meet enrollment goals.
       

  • Event Planning & Student Engagement

    • Help plan and evaluate on-campus and virtual recruitment events.

    • Participate in tabling sessions, group presentations, and individual meetings with prospective students and families.

    • Advise and train student workers involved in recruitment and admissions support.

The Admissions Counselor will also facilitate the transition of new scholars by leading orientation programs, serving as a primary contact for students and families, and participating in college events and committees.

After training, the Admissions Counselor will also work with various software including Slate, Microsoft Office 365, and FileMaker.

Qualifications:

  • Excellent communication (both written and verbal), interpersonal, and public speaking skills

  • Ability and willingness to learn job-related software

  • Critical thinker with a proactive approach to problem-solving and decision-making

Experience working in university admissions or a related higher education setting is preferred.

 

MINIMUM EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE & REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS

This position will report to the Director of Admissions.

The Schreyer Honors College is supportive of flexible work arrangements when aligned with the ability to meet the needs of the unit and the essential duties of the position. Questions related to flexible work should be directed to the hiring manager during the interview process.

Please note that this is not a fully remote position. In accordance with the Schreyer Honors College guidelines, this position typically requires a minimum of four days per week of on-site work at the designated work location.

 

BACKGROUND CHECKS/CLEARANCES

This position requires the following clearances in addition to applicable background checks: PA State Police Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance Form, and Federal (FBI) Fingerprint Criminal Background Check. This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid driver's license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.

SALARY & BENEFITS

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades, is $51,000.00 - $74,000.00.
