Assistant Production Editor Full Description

Job Description:

NOTE: This role is based in New York City and encourages a minimum of two days per week in the SoHo office. Some roles or teams may require additional in-office attendance if the essential functions of the role require it.

THE OPPORTUNITY
This assistant PE role provides support for multimedia publishing and department administration. Working closely with the Managing Editor, they assist with print and  ebook work and administration that falls outside frontlist simultaneous pub needs, such as backlist conversion projects and frontlist updates. They support the Audio team by liaising between the production group and by routing audio packaging for digital and physical editions. With oversight from manager, they also oversee the print and digital production of a small number of typeset and graphic novel Spanish translations as print and ebooks (~12 per year). As the assistant to the department, they help with department-wide administrative tasks such as maintaining the team calendar and taking notes at team meetings. They learn all aspects of the publishing program so that they can move confidently into a Production Editor role.   

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Support the Managing Editor's oversight of ebooks by creating reports, managing and documenting ebook file updates, and maintaining equipment.
  • Serve as production contact for ebook backlist projects as directed, with scope and schedule of projects defined by manager.
  • Route and review copy and files for audio packaging, both digital and physical products.
  • Attend weekly Audio Production Status meeting and follow up with audio team on files and dates.
  • Assist with production of Spanish-translated print titles (graphic novels and typeset) by working with manager to set and monitor schedules, route files, and liaise with typesetter when needed.
  • Manage production for ebook versions of Spanish-translated titles in #5 as well as backlist Spanish titles.
  • Assist with ongoing and annual production team administration, as directed. Develop production skills by joining team meetings, covering for colleagues on vacation, and learning on the job about other areas of production.
