Description 
Reporting to the Vice President of Marketing and Communications, the Assistant Vice President (AVP) of Communications serves as a strategic leader in advancing Hofstra University’s brand, and reputation. This role is pivotal in crafting and sharing compelling, values-driven narratives that reflect Hofstra’s commitment to interdisciplinary learning, community engagement, student success, and organizational agility. Through integrated storytelling across media relations, digital content, social media, and video production, the AVP builds a cohesive and inspiring brand identity rooted in the University’s values: Belonging, Community, Creativity, Discovery, and Integrity. The AVP works in close partnership with the academic leadership of Hofstra’s colleges and schools to uncover and elevate stories of student achievement, faculty expertise, research innovation, and community impact. The role also collaborates with admissions and enrollment teams to develop engaging content for prospective students and families, and with alumni relations and development to spotlight Hofstra graduates and reinforce lifelong pride and connection to the University. All communications and campaigns are designed to support Hofstra 100: The Strategic Plan for Hofstra University, advancing key priorities and amplifying Hofstra’s distinctive voice across audiences—internal and external, local and national. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Supervises the Senior Director of Public Relations, Director of Public Relations, Magazine Editor, Social Media Manager, and Internal Communications Specialist. Manages media relations at the local and national level and handles media inquiries and expert requests. Identifies and pitches compelling stories to elevate the profile of Hofstra University, its faculty, students, alumni, and programs. Develops and executes a comprehensive content strategy that spans press releases, news stories, the university magazine, internal and external newsletters, social media, and videos. Writes and edits speeches, remarks, letters, and op-eds for senior leadership, faculty, and board members. Serves as the university spokesperson with both student and external media. Acts as lead producer on university video projects, from strategic planning and scripting to overseeing production and final delivery—collaborating with internal and external teams to ensure high production value, brand alignment, and storytelling impact. Partners with videographers, editors, and subject matter experts to produce content for admissions marketing campaigns, donor engagement, institutional storytelling, and internal communications. Assists the Vice President with the development and execution of crisis communication strategies. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications  | Bachelor’s degree required. 5+ years in a supervisory role. Strong communication, organizational and interpersonal skills. Experience publishing content on the web.

Preferred Qualifications  | Experience in higher education, preferred. Experience as a video producer.

Hofstra University provides the above salary* as a good faith estimate of the starting pay range which considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience and education. In addition to the salary offered, we offer a collegial and inclusive culture, and a benefits program which includes generous paid time off, paid holidays, tuition remission for employees and eligible dependents, and a retirement plan with University contributions.
