Job Description Summary:
The Trachtenberg School in GW’s Columbian College of Arts and Sciences (CCAS) is a focal point for public affairs education, research, and public service at the George Washington University. Building on a rich tradition of education for public service and on its location in the nation’s capital the George Washington University offers a superior education for students wishing to pursue public affairs-oriented academic programs. The Trachtenberg School is seeking an Associate Director, Admissions and Recruitment reporting to the Director, The Trachtenberg School of Public Policy and Public Administration.

Responsibilities Include:
  • Serve as primary representative of the Trachtenberg School to prospective students (and applicants up to the point of matriculation) year-round.
  •  Provide information to prospective applicants through email, phone, webinars, group information sessions, school fairs, and approximately 200 personal meetings annually.
  • Represent George Washington and the Trachtenberg School (often with faculty members) at key recruitment opportunities and events such as Idealist Fairs, NASPAA (and other peer group) Admissions Director conferences.
  • Counsel prospective students on University programs, policies, and procedures.
  • Update, improve, and manage the communication plan for prospective students (including email campaigns within the Slate platform – and individual correspondence to prospective students, applicants), and accepted students.
  • Plan and manage all elements of admissions information sessions (online and in person) and a full-day open house for approximately 200 accepted students.
  • In coordination with department leadership and CCAS, identify and attend off-campus recruitment events to meet strategic recruitment goals (such as increasing the diversity of our student body).
  • Coordinate review of applications for three Masters programs, three certificate programs, and a PhD program (approximately 1000 applications annually).
  • Evaluate academic records, background and experience of all applicants; review applications to determine eligibility for admission; monitor all school and department standards and pre-requisites in order to ensure that applicants meet these criteria.
  • Assist faculty with use of Slate for admission review.
  • Enter data, manage records, and extract reports through Slate. Use extracted data to create spreadsheets of applicant data for use throughout the admission process.
  • Enter financial awards made to admitted students and track uptake. Monitor availability of endowment funds. 
  • Track and help with student financial award decisions.
  • Communicate basic info on financial award opportunities to prospective and current students.
  •  Serve as liaison with CCAS.
  • Act as the primary staff liaison between university offices concerned with student marketing, admissions, and enrollment and the school faculty.
  • Provide regular updates to department leadership and faculty on recruitment activities and progress toward goals.
  • Provide strategic counsel and leadership to the Director and school faculty leadership in areas of recruitment and enrollment strategy. This may include convening faculty committees or task forces on enrollment, conducting benchmarking research on peer institutions with recommendations for enrollment strategies, or other related activities.
  • Work closely with Faculty Directors for each academic program to determine admission standards and priorities for use of merit fellowship funding.
  • Collaborate with other staff at the Trachtenberg School, and (depending on qualifications and experience) may supervise 1-2 full or part-time staff.
  • Intentionally contribute to the inclusive nature of the Trachtenberg School community.

Performs other work-related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 5 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 3 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
