Job Description  | The Barnes Center at The Arch is Syracuse University’s integrated health and wellness center which incorporates health promotion, counseling, health, and recreation. As part of the Health Promotion team, the Associate Director takes a leadership role in guiding the development and implementation of evidence-based health promotion strategies, programs, and services based on campus needs and priorities. To assess the ongoing impact of programs and services the Associate Director ensures the evaluation of health initiatives and strategies to measure shifts in behavior change or health outcomes. In addition to oversight for day-to-day Health Promotion operations this position directly supervises professional staff, two assistant directors and a health promotion specialist, and indirectly supervises a team of student peer educators. Focus areas of the health promotion team include alcohol and other drug harm reduction, sexual and relationship violence prevention, sexual health, and mental wellness. The Associate Director builds and maintains collaborative relationships with the other Barnes Center departments to provide integrated health and wellness for the student community.
Education and Experience  | A master’s degree in public health, health promotion, health education, health communication, higher education administration or a closely related field of study. Requires three (3) plus years of post-bachelor’s degree professional experience in the field of health/wellness education with progressively increasing responsibilities. Experience supervising professional staff. Five (5) plus years of post-bachelor’s degree professional experience in the field of college health promotion with progressively increasing responsibilities strongly preferred. Certification such as Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES), Master Certified Health Education Specialist (MCHES), or Certified in Public Health (CPH), strongly preferred.
Skills and Knowledge  | Experience as a collaborative leader. Knowledge of best practices in college health promotion and public health. Ability to oversee operational and physical spaces ensuring administration of policies, reservations, and equipment use. Experience providing training and on-going development to students, peer educators, and/or employees. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Understanding of principles of diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility and application of these principles within the context of health promotion and public health. Ability to work a flexible schedule that includes some evenings and weekends.
Responsibilities  | Provide direct supervision to three professional staff members, and indirect supervision to student employee team including training and ongoing development. Responsible for the administration and operation of signature services such as the Crowley Family MindSpa, Walters Pet Therapy Program, Meditation Room, and Peer Leader Team; including identification of opportunities for increased utilization and meeting student needs. Evaluation of health promotion programs and services. Oversee day-to-day operations of the Health Promotion department (outreach requests, IT requests, office coverage, etc.) Serves on cross-departmental committees and initiatives. Serve on Health Promotion Leadership team.
