At City Fund, we work to increase educational opportunities for students and families by partnering with city and state leaders to create innovative public school systems. City Fund provides financial support and expertise to local leaders seeking to improve educational opportunities in their cities. We support 23 cities across the country and hope to eventually reach most American cities. We focus on supporting:

ABOUT THE ROLE
We're seeking an exceptional Data Director to lead our data systems, analytics, and reporting strategy. In this role, you'll build upon and optimize our data infrastructure—ensuring we have accurate, accessible information to drive decision-making and demonstrate impact across our education portfolio. You'll translate complex data into compelling stories for board members, funders, and partners while building systems that support organizational learning and growth. You’ll work in close partnership with the VP of Learning and Evaluation and the VP of Seats and Strategy to ensure we have the data we need to measure our progress to goals, inform our strategic decisions, and drive our learning agenda.

This is an opportunity to shape how a mission-driven organization uses data to expand educational opportunity and improve outcomes for students across cities and states. We are looking for a detail-oriented professional with deep experience in data systems, database management, and visualization tools. The ideal candidate is a systems thinker who can build durable and scalable data assets, document them clearly, and empower others to make use of them.

Requirements

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

Data Systems & Infrastructure (40%)
  • Design and maintain a coherent, well-documented data system for tracking organizational progress to goals 
  • Establish and document data governance rules for all information collected and housed in a cloud-based data warehouse, including metric definition, quality assurance protocols, accuracy validation, data suppression handling, and imputation standards
  • Define and maintain organizational criteria and rules for data related to students, schools, cities, and the overall portfolio across multiple geographies
  • Oversee and continue to improve internal school growth forecasting tools to ensure our projections are accurate, current, and properly archived on an annual cycle
  • Continuously improve data tools, processes, and systems based on stakeholder feedback
  • Hire and manage a Database Manager to ensure that all data is accurate, follows our internal reporting rules, and is up to date.

Progress Monitoring & Reporting (30%)
  • Build and maintain the organization's single source of truth for external reporting
  • Produce annual data reports for key funders and partners
  • Lead the annual Results Review process for internal progress monitoring and board reporting
  • Develop a prioritization framework for managing ad-hoc data requests from funders, leadership, partners, and cities
  • Produce annual portfolio reporting for key funders and partners
  • Create and maintain interactive dashboards visualizing progress toward goals across cities, including enrollment, demographics, and student proficiency

Data Translation & Strategic Support (20%)
  • Compile and analyze data and create compelling visualizations and materials to inform organizational strategy decisions
  • Develop tables, graphs, and presentations that translate complex data for diverse audiences including board members, prospective funders, and grantees

Stakeholder & Vendor Management (10%)
  • Manage relationships and contracts with data systems vendors
  • Investigate new pathways for accessing key data more quickly, cheaply, and accurately
  • Coordinate with partners to ensure data consistency and alignment across organizations

QUALIFICATIONS

Required experience
  • 7+ years of experience in data management, analytics, or business intelligence roles
  • Demonstrated ability to establish data governance frameworks and documentation standards
  • Proven expertise with modern data warehouse systems (BigQuery experience strongly preferred)
  • Strong SQL skills and experience with data visualization tools (Tableau, Looker, Power BI, or similar)
  • Track record of translating complex data into actionable insights for non-technical audiences
  • Experience managing external vendors and cross-organizational partnerships
  • Excellent project management skills with ability to balance competing priorities
  • Commitment to educational equity and improving outcomes for students

Preferred
  • Experience in the education sector, particularly K-12 or education philanthropy
  • Familiarity with education data systems and student outcome metrics
  • Experience supporting board-level and funder reporting
  • Experience with statistical analysis methods or ability to manage a highly technical direct report

The salary for this role is $190,000.
